"What?" I breathed out silently.
"I said I have to see her," Mr. Miller said, sighing heavily. "She needs me."
I silently glared at the floor, suppressing my anger and hurt.
Mr. Miller looked over at me and gently felt my cheek. "You understand, don't you?"
After a long pause, I stood and said, "Yeah, I do."
Mr. Miller let out a relieved sigh and a small smile. "That's a relief. For a second there I thought you would be-"
I cut him off. "I understand that you have a choice," I said, crossing my arms and staring straight at him.
He looked confused as he said, "Huh?"
"....Her or me," I said, feeling anger boil inside of me. I felt bad that she was sick, but keeping my man was far more important to me than little Miss Jennifer having a miracle recovery and stealing Aden back,
Mr. Miller stared at the floor and then back up again. "You know, this is completely unlike you," he said with a slight chuckle. "You know how hard this is for me, why can't you understand?"
I stubbornly stood my ground. "Her or me?"
"Amethyst, what are you talking about? Why do I have to choose?" he said angrily. He stepped up to me slowly and held onto my shoulders. "I care about both you AND Jennifer. Please; don't make this hard for me," he said in a calmer tone.
"Well, I guess it comes down to who you care about more," I said glaring at him in determination. "The time is now, so make your decision Aden."
"Why are you doing this to me?" Mr. Miller asked sadly. He let go of my shoulders and stepped up to his desk. He sat down in his chair and placed his head in his hands.
I almost wanted to let him go, but I had seen what Jennifer looked like. She was beyond gorgeous and- HELLO!- a little more near his age group. I stepped up to him and took a hold of his shoulders. I gently massaged him as I spoke, "Come on, Aden. It's easy....All you have to do is choose. No pressure," I said soothingly.
He slowly lifted his head up and looked at me sadly. "Come here," he said sliding back in his chair and patting his lap.
I sat in his lap and wrapped my arms around his neck. "So have you made your decision yet?" I asked, slowly nuzzling my head into his neck.
He sighed and looked at me with a grin. "Come on," he said exasperatedly.
"No, you come on! Just stay with me, Aden! What do you have to worry about? Jennifer's fine!" I said pouting. I wasn't realizing how absolutely pathetic I was acting.
He sighed again and held onto my waist. "But what if she's not?"
"If she wasn't I'm sure she wouldn't call," I said, looking into his eyes sincerely. "Besides," I said, fingering the buttons on his sweater. "You said you would do anything I want you to."
He laughed and smiled up at me. He gave me a quick kiss on the lips and said, "Come over for dinner tonight, I want to talk to you about something."
I smiled, knowing I was inches away from victory. "Okay, I'll ask Melinda to cover for me again." I got off his lap and pulled my tote bag off of the floor.
