Katya had been plunged into darkness which was the one thing that she feared the most. What made it worse was that there was a little girl who she didn't know clinging onto her jumper asking for help. Katya was panicking and felt as if the darkness was closing in around her and gripping onto her like a vice.
She banged on the door and tried the handle again when it finally opened. The light from the other side welcomed her and she ran towards it. As she left the room she sprinted down the corridor as fast as she could.
"Please don't leave me." The little voice called out to her but she ran away from it.
She didn't want to be in this abandoned house a minute longer so she left as soon as she was given the opportunity. It felt as if she was being held there and she was escaping but she didn't know what from.
The ice cold air hit her when she stepped outside and she saw the grass was no longer green. It had snowed whilst she was inside the house at least eight inches.
How long had I been inside?
She headed back to her house without looking back. As the sky darkened the snow crunched beneath her feet. She took her phone out of her pocket and realised she had five missed calls from Jacob and two texts asking where she was.
Before she put her phone away she noticed the time. It was seven o'clock.
She was sure that she had gone outside not long after three this afternoon. When she opened the door to her house she felt instantly at ease. She was no longer on the verge of a panic attack and was glad to see Jacob sitting at the kitchen table.
"Baby where have you been?!" He almost shouted as he got up from his chair.
"I only went out for a walk to explore. The strangest thing just happened to me."
"I got back at five and you were nowhere to be seen! You weren't answering your phone so of course I was worried about you." He pulled her close to him and she was glad of his warmth.
"I didn't get any of your calls and I had no idea I was gone out for that long. I have to tell you about what I just found." She took him into the lounge and they sat down on their new black velvet sofa.
"Okay but can I give you the good news first?" He lifted up her legs so that she was laying down and they were rested on his lap. It was their favourite way to sit whether they were watching TV or just relaxing.
"Sure but the scariest thing just happened to me..." She grabbed a cushion and put it behind her head.
"I met Harry in town and he took me to an advertising agency. I showed them my CV which says I have experience of working within the industry when I left college and I told him about my skills and I got a job!" He ignored what she said but it truly was good news so she was happy for him.
"Oh well done baby!" She leant over and kissed him.
"Only problem is I start tomorrow at nine so we better get some dinner and an early night."
Katya's terrible experience that she had witnessed earlier almost slipped her mind. She wasn't sure how time had moved so fast when she was inside the abandoned house but she was glad that Jacob had gotten a job and she already had one secured. All she had to do was visit the pre school in town and they would both be employed. Soon enough they could get married and start their own family together.
Jacob had been to the supermarket whilst he was in town and brought enough food to last them for two weeks so they cooked spaghetti and meatballs. As they were halfway through their meal Jacob asked her a question.
"What was it you were going to tell me earlier?"
She stopped eating and told him about what happened.
"Shit Katya you should have told me about this sooner." He held her hand across the table.
"I know but you were so happy about getting your new job that I completely forgot about it."
"But this isn't good. It's pretty crazy."
"I'm not lying Jacob." She let go of his hand and continued eating.
"Baby I'm not saying you are. It just sounds a little extreme. How about we go over to the house on Saturday when I'm off work?"
"Fine we'll go but I'm not looking forward to going back there."
They finished their dinner and got ready for bed. As she got undressed she saw her body in the mirror and looked at her scars. For some odd reason today had brought the memories of how she obtained those scars back to her.
Jacob kissed her goodnight and was soon fast asleep cuddling her from behind. There were six candles in the room and she had one beside her bed. She watched the flame flicker and thought about the little girl that she encountered earlier.
Why was she in the house all alone?
Why did she hide in the wardrobe?
Why did she ask me for help?
For some odd reason something at the back of her mind was telling her to go back and help that child.
