Katya felt rough all day. From the minute she woke up her head had felt as if it was being crushed by a heavy machine. Her lessons at school were the only things keeping her sane. Or so she thought. She fell asleep for a few minutes during English and was woken up by one of her students shaking her.
"Miss? Are you okay?" Katya opened her eyes slowly and saw a plump round face staring at her with concern.
"Yes Henry. Sorry I must have nodded off." She rubbed her eyes and sat up trying to regain composure.
"Okay Miss. You look awful." Henry said as he went back to his desk. He began whispering to Lydia who sat next to him.
She couldn't believe that she'd just fallen asleep during a class. Never had she done such a thing in her many years of teaching. Her face turned red with shame.
During lunch she went to the bathroom to splash her face with cold water. When she looked at her face in the mirror she could see what Henry meant. Her face had turned a light shade of yellow and her eyes were bloodshot. Maybe it was a lack of sleep? Or the fact she hadn't eaten since yesterday and had no appetite.
She went back to teach her lessons for the rest of the day and was glad when the bell rang indicating that it was the end of the school day. As she drove home she kept getting distracted by black spots in her vision. If she didn't blink for too long they would grow in size and cloud her sight. At one point she had to swerve her car quickly before she went head first into a lamp post.
Katya was scared. She didn't know what was happening to her and she didn't like it. When she got home she pulled up outside her house and took a few deep breaths. It was silent apart from the sound of birds singing high up in the trees. She closed her eyes and enjoyed listening to the birds as it begun to sooth her.
Suddenly a loud car horn brought her back to reality. She looked in the car mirror and saw a small black car parking up behind her. For a few seconds she didn't realise who it was.
A tall slender woman with snow white hair got out of the car. She waved wildly and came running towards Katya's car.
"Oh my gosh!" Katya shouted in delight as she opened her door.
"Kat!" Her sister Ida bombarded her with a huge hug just as Katya stepped out of her car. She wore a sweet perfume which smelt of strawberries.
Katya was surprised but excited. She forgot that Ida was coming to visit her in a couple of days but she was a day early.
"I'm so glad to see you! I thought I'd surprise you." Ida kissed her on the cheek and smiled.
"You sure did! I can't believe you're really here." Katya looked up at her happily. Ida was stunning. She was three years older than her but had the exact same hair. When they were younger people mistook them for twins even though they were a few years apart.
Ida looked Katya up and down.
"Are you alright?""I'm not feeling too good today. Let's get inside and I'll tell you all about it."
Ida grabbed her bags and followed Katya inside. Whilst Ida unpacked her belongings in the guest room Katya made them both a cup of tea. They sat down at the kitchen table discussing what they had both been up to over the last couple of months. Katya wasn't sure how she was going to tell Ida about their dead sister.
They sipped their tea and Katya broke the news of her pregnancy. Ida was delighted.
"I can't believe it Kat! You're going to be a great mother." She held onto Katya's hand over the table and squeezed it.
"Thanks sis but Jacob doesn't seem too pleased."
"What do you mean? Where is he anyway? You've barely mentioned him."
Katya went quiet and looked down.
"I think he's cheating on me.""You're kidding right?" Ida stopped drinking and slammed her fist onto the table.
Katya was shocked at her sisters outburst.
"It's just a guess." She told Ida about Sara and his new job.Ida couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"Whilst you're at work tomorrow I'm going to follow him and see what he gets up to." She winked at Katya."Don't you think that's a little extreme?"
"So what? I'm not having any man cheat on my sister!"
Katya felt greatful to have a sister like Ida. It was a lovely surprise having her come to stay so early. She hoped that having Ida there would take her mind off Elsa.
