Katya returned home soon after four. She was in high spirits singing along to a song on the car radio when she abruptly came to a stop at the mailbox. Up ahead of her parked outside their house was a deep purple car. She wondered who it could be.
She drove towards the car and parked up behind it. Perhaps someone had brought Jacob home from work. As soon as she got out of the car she heard faint voices coming from inside.
The door was unlocked so she pushed it open and stepped in. There was laughter coming from the lounge. Sitting on the sofa was Jacob and beside him was a woman. They both turned around when Katya walked in.
"Hey baby!" Jacob got up and gave her a hug.
Katya watched the woman over his shoulder. She had wavey dark brown hair and wore a white blouse and tight black pencil skirt.
"Katya this is Sara. She works in the same office as me and offered to give me a lift home." He gestured towards Sara.
Sara got up and smiled sweetly at Katya.
"Hello, Your house is very cute."
"Yeah, thanks." Katya replied bluntly.
"I was just telling Sara about us deciding to move here and she agrees it was a great idea." Jacob sat down on a chair underneath the window.
"It is. Jacobs career could flourish if he works hard like he says he does." She giggled and sat back down on the sofa.
Katya didn't like this woman. She felt furious so she decided to leave the room.
"I'm going to call my sister."
"Okay baby. Sara was about to leave anyway." Jacob shouted after her.
Katya went up to their room to call Ida. She thought about Sara who was tall and pretty with big breasts. Katya soon felt ugly. Her body was covered in scars when Sara's skin looked flawless.
She sighed and sat on the bed to ring her sister. The phone rang a few times and Ida picked up.
"Hey girl!" Ida said cheerfully.
"Hey sis. I miss you."
"I miss you too! I'm going to come and visit you both soon. Mum's with me and asked what the address is so she can come and see you too."
"Yes please do. It's 106 Wilmer Drive outside of Kalmar."
Katya heard Ida telling her mum. It went quiet and she heard muffled voices.
"I will let you know when I'm coming Kat. It will be in the next couple of weeks okay but I gotta go now. Love you lots. Bye."
Ida hung up the phone before Katya could reply. That was strange. She didn't even get to have a proper conversation with her sister. She wondered why Ida wanted to get off of the phone so quickly when she told their mother the address.
Katya looked out of the window at the view outside. What was left of the sun was beginning to set above the small islands out at sea and thoughts raced through her head.
Was it a good idea to come here?
Will we truly be happy?
She was admiring the snow melting on the branches of the tree outside when she heard a car door slam. As she craned her neck to see who it was she spotted Sara getting into her car.
"I'll see you tomorrow morning bright and early." She called out of the window.
Katya couldn't see Jacob from where she was standing so she went downstairs. She found him in the kitchen getting a beer out of the fridge. He sat down on the sofa and opened it whilst turning on the TV.
She sat down beside him and he put his arm round her."How was your day babe? What's the school like?"
Katya told him about the children and how nice the school was and that she starts tomorrow. She said that she thought they should buy a second hand car so that they could both get to their jobs everyday.
"Oh no you don't need to worry about that yet. Sara said I could get a lift with her some mornings and Grant who I met today offered to pick me up too til I get a car."
Katya went quiet at the thought of Jacob getting into a car almost everyday with Sara in her tight skirt. She shook the idea from her head.
Jacob cooked dinner and Katya washed up. Afterwards they put on a horror movie and cuddled on the sofa together. When the film had ended Jacob got on top of Katya and kissed her passionately. She kissed him back and pulled him close. He took off his top and she admired his body above her. She laughed as he picked her up and took her upstairs.
He threw her down gently on the bed and pulled her clothes off. When he got to her underwear he kissed one of the scars leading down to her inner high. She felt goosebumps rise on her bare skin and ran her hands through his hair.
They made passionate love for two hours. Jacob was breathless by the time he had finished and lay there with Katya resting her head on his hairy chest. The light from the candles cast a dim glow over them in the hot room.
Katya got up and opened the windows. The stars shone brightly in the sky and the air smelt of wood smoke. She closed her eyes and breathed in the night but when she opened them she saw a small figure standing on the grass outside.
It was holding what looked to be a flower but because it was dark Katya wasn't sure. Suddenly she realised that it was the little girl she saw in the abandoned house. She turned to Jacob who was still laying down.
"Jacob, there's a little girl standing outside."
"What? At this time of night?" He got up as she moved away from the window so he could look.
"I can't see anyone honey. You must have imagined it."
He moved out of the way and she looked out again but there was no one there. She shut the window and got back into bed with him.
"Don't worry you're probably just tired." He kissed her on the forehead and lay down to sleep.
Katya lay awake for what felt like hours as she tried to sleep. Every now and again she'd hear a tinkling of bells and a little girls laughter.
