Later that evening Ida helped Katya with the cooking. Ever since Ida was little she loved to help their mother cook. Especially desserts. Tonight they were making chicken casserole. Katya's appetite had returned and she couldn't wait to have some of her sisters infamous casserole.
As Katya turned quickly to pass Ida some utensils a wave of dizziness washed over her. She held her arms out to steady herself on a chair but missed. Before she went crashing to the floor Ida grabbed her under her arms.
"Kat are you okay?" Ida sat her down.
Katya's vision was clouded with black shadows moving around slowly. She rubbed her eyes to get rid of them but as she did she noticed that they weren't just a figment of her imagination. There were hundreds of shadowy masses crawling across the walls and ceiling. She screamed as they surged towards her.
In a sudden frenzy Katya waved her arms around and kicked out her legs as if to stop the creatures from getting to her. Ida tried her hardest to stop her but Katya kept flailing around in panic.
"Get them away from me!" She shouted.
"There's nothing here! Calm down!" Ida said softly as she held onto Katya's shoulders.
It was obvious that Ida couldn't see them but when Katya focused her vision on Ida she saw that they had gone. Her breathing returned to normal as she calmed down.
"Go and have a lay down Kat. I'll finish off the dinner." Ida took Katya upstairs and helped her get into bed.
"Thank you. I'm sorry about that." Katya mumbled as she got under the covers.
Ida left the room and Katya looked at the clock on her bedside table. It was seven o'clock and Jacob still wasn't back.
Where is he?
Is he really cheating on me?
What the hell were those shadows and why could only I see them?
She felt her eyelids closing as sleep took over.
Katya was woken by raised voices coming from downstairs. It sounded as if an argument was starting so she got up to investigate. Her head was in agony. She took two painkillers and went into the lounge. Jacob was sat on the sofa and Ida was standing pointing her finger at him. She stopped talking when Katya walked in the room.
"What's going on?"
"Nothing. I was just talking to Jacob and wondering where he's been." She said sternly whilst looking at him.
"What time is it?" Katya asked.
"Ten. He's only just walked through the door."
"Why didn't you wake me up sooner?" Katya sat down on the sofa beside Jacob.
"Because I thought you needed your rest. You got yourself in a state earlier."
Katya looked down as Jacob put his arm around her.
"Ida told me about what happened baby. Are you okay?" He stunk of alcohol.
"Where have you been? Drinking with work mates or Sara?" Katya demanded.
"Yes I went out with the guys from work and yes Sara was there." He admitted.
Katya got up and stormed into the kitchen. Ida followed her and took out a plate from the fridge and put it down on the table.
"Have something to eat. Tomorrow I will make sure we find out really what Jacob is up to. I don't trust him one bit Kat. I've always liked him but for some reason I'm getting a bad feeling." Ida kissed Katya on her head and went up to bed.
That night Katya lay in bed with her back to Jacob. He hadn't bothered to even say good night. He'd fallen asleep within minutes of getting into bed. She didn't know what Ida was going to find out about him tomorrow and she wasn't looking forward to it.
***
Katya woke up feeling nauseous. She ran into the bathroom and felt something slowly rise up at the back of her throat. She coughed and coughed until finally she was sick. But it wasn't sick. She had thrown up black goo. Her heart raced as she brought up more.
The school day went by in a blur. Thank fully she hadn't fallen asleep during class. Henry asked her how she was today which she thought was sweet of him. When she went to the bathroom before she left to go home she stopped as she saw her reflection. Elsa was looking back at her.
Katya turned around as if she'd find Elsa standing there behind her. But she wasn't there. As she looked into Elsa's eyes she could see her face morphing back to herself. She blinked several times and Elsa was gone. Katya realised that the time had come to tell Ida about her revelation.
The day was pleasant. It hadn't been very warm and sunny for a while. Katya embraced the heat on her skin. The snow from yesterday had melted completely and children laughed and played happily in the playground. She waved bye to some of her students and got into her car.
As she watched the children she thought to herself about becoming a mother. She had wanted to start a family soon after she had met Jacob. They'd been together for five years and now she questioned whether he was the one. She held her belly with one hand and imagined a little girl or boy. It was definitely getting bigger and she smiled to herself.
When she returned home she noticed Ida's car was still parked outside. She walked into the house and found her sister sitting on the sofa watching TV.
"No luck?" Katya asked.
Ida didn't turn her head away from the screen. "Unfortunately not. I found his work and even his office but I couldn't see him anywhere. I'll look again tomorrow. He's definitely up to something though."
Katya sat down beside her. "I've got something to tell you. Could you turn this off please?" She didn't recognise the programme that was on TV. Two women were in a pub arguing. It must have been a soap or something.
"Sure. What's up?" Ida switched it off and turned her body round to face Katya.
"You're probably gonna think I'm crazy but everything I'm going to tell you is true. Elsa is haunting the abandoned house outside and up through the trees. I have seen her almost every day and also spoken to her. She took me inside the house which was our childhood home and even had some of my old toys. Our father killed her."
Ida sat there frozen in silence with her eyes wide. Katya hoped that her sister would believe her.
