A/N: Sorry I haven't updated lately, and sorry in advance for the fact you guys are gonna hate me for this chapter.
Our weekend had gone like normal, spending time with each other and being goofballs together. It was Monday that changed everything... or maybe things had already been changing, and I hadn't noticed until now.
Eugene and I were both busy. Really busy. The guys were trying to put out at least one Try Guy video a week, so they were more consistent, which meant filming way more videos. That, on top of the other videos he was staring in, producing, editing, and any other work he had.. I didn't see him at all Tuesday. He wasn't going home at the regular end of the work day either, either staying late for shooting or editing. It wasn't uncommon for me to wake up to use the restroom at 3am, check Snapchat and see that he'd recently posted he was still at the office. We'd send a few snaps here or there, and I'd either fall back asleep, or he'd say goodnight so he could go back to work.
Of course, this wasn't all on him, I was busy too. Meetings were constant, I often had my head buried in research or lost in HTML or editing something else. I was also producing more and asked to star in other videos. There were sometimes we'd be in the same video, but we would maybe be on set at the same time for about an hour or so, or sometimes get paired together, but that was the extent of us seeing each other in person.
This went on for about two weeks, even weekends behind hard because we were both catching up on sleep, and had lives outside of each other as well. There had been a date last Sunday, and some more texting and calls than usual during the weekend, but it felt like I was in a long distance relationship- even though I could see his desk from my own.
Something needed to be done, not liking this weird rut we were in.
Eugene was actually at his desk for a little bit on Friday morning but had his headphones on, so I decided to send him an IM.
Me: Any guesses on if you're gonna be working late tonight?
Eugene: I'm hoping to get out on time today. Have a little bit of filming to do, but it should only take an hour, otherwise editing.
Me: Wanna grab food and hang out at one of our places? We can watch some movies. I miss you.
Eugene: I miss you too, which is weird since I can look up at you right now.
I glanced up at that and we met eyes, giving each other a smile.
Eugene: Let's do it. My place, because, ya know, pups?
Me: Sounds good. Meet you here at six? If you're late, I'll come find you and pull you by your hair ;P
Eugene: Not the hair!
Me: Then don't be late.
Eugene: Yes, ma'am.
Things felt better. We were flirting, having a date, and making it work. Speaking of work, I went back to mine until it was time to be done for the day.
As promised, he wasn't late. He walked me down to my car and I followed him back to his place, and we ordered Postmates once we got settled in. It felt nice to hang around, eat, watch movies and spend time together. There'd even been some light making out, which had been much needed.
Once food was done, we curled up and watched movies together, enjoying each other's company. I looked up at him to make a comment and noticed he was wiped out cold. I considered whether I should try to wake him, curl up and sleep with him, or head out.
I knew he wouldn't mind a sleepover, even though we hadn't discussed it, and it wouldn't be our first time just falling asleep together, but I was conscious and not overly tired, so I decided it was best if I went home.
I got up carefully, slipping out of his loose grasp, and laid a blanket over him. He was cute when he slept, even if I was disappointed in our date being cut a little short. I knew how little he slept though, so I couldn't be mad at him. I slipped my boots back on, and tried to be as quiet as I could getting my keys off his coffee table, but he stirred and opened his eyes.
"Where are you going?" he asked, rubbing his eyes and shifted to his elbows.
"I was just gonna let you sleep. I'm not super tired right now since I had coffee," I said, holding my keys in my hands and tried not to fuss with them.
"You don't have to go," he said, yawning and ran his fingers through his hair before sitting up. "Catnap helped. We can finish the movie, then maybe when we're both ready for sleep, we can turn this into a sleepover," he commented.
I chewed on my lip, considering my words. "Eugene.." I started, and the key fidgeting did start. "Over the past few weeks.. have you thought about if it would be a good idea for us to take kinda a break? We've both got crazy busy schedules right now, and maybe we need to take some time for ourselves to get adjusted to them, before trying to add another person to the equation," I said, watching him.
His brows went up at that, and if he wasn't awake before, he was now. "Wait, what?"
"We're working long hours, when we're off, we're usually trying to get in a few hours of sleep... Weekends aren't even really our niche anymore since that is more time spent trying to get more sleep... And then there's friends and family to add into the equation... This is our second date in two weeks, when we used to spend the entire weekend together. We're not even taking care of ourselves as individuals, how can we worry about maintaining a relationship through this shift as well?" I asked. I wasn't mad at him about any of it. I was trying to think of what was best for both of us. I could see the dark circles under his eyes, and I was sure under my makeup covered face, I had signs of exhaustion too.
He was watching me, processing what all I was saying. "Are you.. breaking up with me?" he asked, getting up.
I let out a small sigh, brushing my hair out of my face. "I don't know if "breaking up with you" is the proper term or not. I'm just suggesting a break. On times that we want to hang out and don't have to force ourselves to stay awake, we can. You're still one of my best friends. But I just think it would be better if we don't have to worry about our boyfriend or girlfriend," I said.
"So basically a breakup, just sugarcoated," he stated.
I could feel the wall to guard his emotions coming up, and I reached over to take his hands. "I'm saying a break. If we still want to once we get everything situated and we're doing better on our own, then we can go back to how things are supposed to be. I just see how exhausted you are, and neither of us needs more stress," I said, not wanting to hurt him, even if this idea hurt me.
"Is this what you want?" he asked.
"It's what I think is best," I replied, watching him.
Eugene seemed to consider it before nodding. "Makes sense. At this rate, we're barely acting like boyfriend and girlfriend anyway. Maybe, in a few weeks, our lives will calm down, and we'll get back to being us," he said. I saw that part of him truly understood and agreed me with. But I also saw the other part, the part behind the wall he was starting to put back up, was guarding his emotions and not showing how much this bothered him.
I rested my hand on his cheek and leaned up, kissing him once more deeply, not knowing when it would happen again. My heart hurt, and I pulled back slowly, looking up at him. "You're still my best friend, and if you ever need or want me, just call," I told him, pecking his lips once more before fully pulling away.
"Same goes for you, Honeybun," he said.
I had to blink a few times to push back the feeling like tears were coming. "See you Monday, Pretty Boy," I turned and headed out, going to my car. The click of my seat belt was like the breaking of a floodgate, and the tears came. "Dammit. What did I just do?" I murmured to myself.
