Chapter Four:
Kenzie's P.O.V:
While Rick and Shane went to Get Carol and Sophia I cleaned up Lori's wound with the stations first aid kit.
'Good news it probably feels a lot worse than it is, it's just a small minor tear in your scalp, so I think you'll be fine. we will keep an eye on you for a concussion, just rest up and relax okay.'
'Thank you Kenzie, I'm just glad Carl didn't get hurt.' I nodded and cleared everything away, I placed the kit in my bag, it'll be handy to take with.
'So how was your party last night? Sorry I couldn't make it.'
'Don't worry about it, I understand. It was a brilliant night, I had a blast.'
'Seems Rick did too, getting so drunk he had to crash at Ruby's.' she laughed laying down on the couch in the staff room.
'To be honest I hardly saw him all night, so many people were grabbing my attention, but we did have a shot race which he won twice so yeah I can imagine what state he was in.' I laughed. she nodded and closed her eyes. 'I'll be back in a few I'll get Carl to come watch over you.' She nodded but her eyes remained closed. I stepped back into the weapons room and got Carl to go sit with his mom, while I sat next to Ruby who was loading her personal gun.
'So where did you sneak off to last night?'
'Huh...'
'I came looking for you and you were gone, you didn't answer your phone, you just left.'
'Well my phone died and I felt kind of sick so I got a cab home, I didn't want to ruin your fun so I didn't tell you.'
'Oh right, it wasn't very safe to go home alone that drunk, anything could have happened.' I replied waiting to see what she would say, to confirm my suspicions.
'I know but I was fine, I got home safe and sound.'
'So you were alone?'
'Of course I was.'
'Ruby Hallows.' I whisper yelled at her.
'What?'
'I can't believe that you would lie to me.' a look of panic spread across her face then she shook it off.
'What are you talking about?'
'Lori just told me Rick crashed at your last night, now if nothing happened you would have no reason to lie to me just now would you?' I eyed her with a raised brow of suspicion.
'Shit, Kenz I screwed up reall-' She was interrupted by Sophia who ran up to me hugging me, I could tell she had been crying, in fact she still was. I quickly looked to Ruby and mouthed this isn't over, she nodded knowing it wouldn't have been.
'Hey you what's wrong?'
'D-dad he, was attacked by someone, h-he-' she sniffled unable to speak anymore from crying. I looked up to see Aunt Carol enter in front of Rick and Shane I stood up and hugged her.
'Ed's dead isn't he?' Carol nodded and started crying.
'He had already been attacked when we got there, I had to uh...' Shane said I nodded in understandable.
'I know I didn't like the guy, but I really am sorry, Aunt Carol, no matter what he was your husband and Sophia's dad, you okay?'
'Thank you, I will be, it's Sophia I am worried about.'
'She'll be fine, don't worry.' I hugged her.
We all had a long chat and got some form of a plan on the go. So far we have agreed leaving town would be best. try find a more secure area and lay low and hope the government get things sorted soon. when we were out of town Ruby, Rick and Shane were going to teach Carol and me to use a gun. We thought it wasn't wise to do it here, as the noise might attract them.
We split into two groups, Shane, myself, Carol and Sophia in my car and Rick, Lori, Carl and Ruby in her car, we all agreed we would head through the town centre and gather a few supplies, because after all we had no idea how long this nightmare was gong to last.
Lori stayed in the car with the kids while Rick, Ruby and Carol took the canned food section of the grocery store, Shane and I headed for the pharmacy section, Shane watched my back while I grabbed everything I could find, I left n shelf untouched. it seemed we weren't the first ones here though, but I still managed to get quite a bit. Once we were done we headed for the home section and grabbed sheets and things, we would need these to keep warm, being the beginning of autumn the nights weren't quite as warm as they had been during the summer months. it made sense to me to grab them. Shane grabbed as much camping gear as he could before we headed back out to the car where the others were putting three baskets full of tinned and dry food into Ruby's trunk.
'Wow tents and everything?' Ruby said noticing
'Thought it made sense, you know.' she nodded
'Good thinking.' she smiled
'Look out.' Sophia called as she pointed to a medium sized group of zombies.
'Shit everyone in the car now. Sophia climbed back into the car with us and we wasted no time getting out of there.
By night fall we were a good three hours of of the city and in the middle of nowhere. We found a quiet side road to pull up into and set up camp for the night, us adults agreeing to take shifts on watch. but first we ate. made a small fire so we had some source of heat. Ruby folded down her back seats and made a bed for the kids in the back of her car with the sheets I grabbed, Rick and Lori took the front seats reclining them back as far as they could me and Carol done the same in our car. Shane agreed to take first shift then Rick and Ruby, Carol and I were not allowed until we learned to handle a gun.
'I love you, will you be okay?' I asked Shane? he nodded kissing me as I lay down to get some shut eye.
