Clara POV
When Valerie left, it was just me, Katherine, and Oliver. Well plus a bunch of other people who called us 'your highness' and 'queen' and a bunch of other weird names.
Oliver had explained that there was a queen of each season. I was the ruler of Spring. I couldn't have come from royalty. My dad may be rich, but only because he owned a big computer software company and did "Save the endangered species" campaigns. And my mother died when I was in second grade.
"So, Queen Clara," Oliver started to say.
"Just call me Clara. I don't want to be referred to as a queen," I interrupted him.
Oliver huffed. "Clara," he said and I nodded for him to go on. "I will be your secretary. So if you need anything, just call."
I nodded to show that I was listening, even though I wasn't. I let my eyes wander to my surroundings. In the corner I my eye I saw something. It was a boy with dirty blond hair. He looked my age, and was standing in an alley.
"Hold that thought," I stopped Oliver in the middle of the sentence, and ran over to the alley. "Hello?" I called.
Sitting behind the dumpster was the boy I had seen. He emerged from his hiding place. I recognized him from the hallways at school. I stuck my hand in my pocket. The photo from my dream was there, so I pulled it out.
"Your next," I murmured.
"What was that?" the boy asked.
"Oh um," I said, "nothing. It was nothing." I gave the picture to him. "Is this you?"
He nodded. "Yeah. Where'd you get it?" he asked.
"Not sure," I answered, "I had a strange dream when I passed out. Written in blood was the words 'you're next' or something. This picture was laying under it." I realized that I should probably introduce myself. "I'm Clara," I said.
"Nathan," he said. "Nathan Brew. And I know who you are. We've been in the same school since sixth grade, and your one of the smartest in the grade." I'm pretty sure I blushed when he said that. I could never take compliments well.
In the cracked cement was a wilting flower. I stared at the sky. Not a single cloud. Right when I realized that, cumulonimbus clouds started to form. Instead of a full on thunderstorm, though, there was only a heavy rain.
I ran under one of the fire escapes and pulled Nathan under it next to me. "I think I did that," I said.
"Your a Spring fairy then?" He asked.
I nodded. "Yeah. Well I'm queen of them actually."
Unexpectedly, Nathan leaned in to kiss me. Surprised, I tripped backwards and my hand pressed something into the wall of the building. We both stepped back to see what happened.
Vines grew along the wall from the ground. They formed the shape of a door. Wood emerged from the building to actually make a door. In the middle of the double doors was a simple carving of a tree.
When I reached out to touch the doorway, the doors opened. I turned to Nathan and he shrugged. I returned the shrug.
"I'm going to go in. Wait here," I said to him.
"Be careful," he advised.
A smile crept upon my face. "I'm not the one who has someone out to kill them."
"Okay. But still, just watch out. I'll be right here," Nathan said.
I nodded and walked through the doorway. The floor was white tile. The walls and ceiling were cream colored and there were doors every ten feet. They were all closed.
There was an open door. Out of curiosity, I walked in. There were women-most with brown hair and green clothing-were huddled around something.
They must've heard me because they turned around. Their faces lit up in both enjoyment and disappointment. They stepped away from what they were surrounding. It was the most beautiful outfit I had ever seen.
On a mannequin was a green sundress that went down to the knees. Around the waist was a darker green ribbon. It was tied behind the neck with strings, leaving most of the back showing. There were tights with vine designs on it with brown leather boots coming to mid-shin.
Next to the mannequin was a table. Laying on the table were accessories. There was a green bow with a floral pattern printed on it. A necklace was next to it. It was a golden chain with a daisy at the end. There was also a small golden tiara. Nothing fancy.
One of the women stepped toward me and said, "We were just finishing it for you. We were going to have someone bring you here, but this works too." She was too perky, but I tried to ignore it.
"This is for me?" I asked. The woman nodded. "It's perfect," I said as I approached it.
Not long after, I was wearing the dress, tights, boots, bow, and tiara. They braided my hair over my right shoulder and put the bow at the bottom. They gave me makeup, too. I never liked to wear the expensive makeup my dad bought me. I just always ended up giving it to Skylar. She was the only one who thought I wasn't completely insane.
They put golden eye shadow on my eyelids and a thin line of black eyeliner under my eye. Cherry lipgloss was put on my lips. It tasted like fresh grown cherries.
The woman who had talked to me before, I guess she was in charge of this project, said, "Now, Clara, go on and turn." She smiled.
I knew what she meant. I looked down at my bracelet and pressed the button. My wings grew from my shoulder blades. I lifted off the ground. The familiar vines grew up my right arm and the tattoo appeared on my left arm. I looked in the mirror. It was the most beautiful I have ever seen myself.
I stared at myself in awe until I heard a scream.
I looked at the women. They all looked perplexed. "Your highness, your subjects need you," the same woman said.
