Early in the morning, we had both woken up.
"How does this demon keep catching us?" I said.
"Well motels aren't the most hidden places we could've been in". I agreed. "Maybe we should try to find somewhere safer, somewhere to blend in but still in plain sight. Let's drive.".
We drove for hours and hours, until we decided to stop off and sit on the grass by a river. I looked around, and I noticed something up against the rugged mountain on the other side of the water. The width of the river was twice my height, but I still had to see what this was.
"Hey... remember that time when I said I was gonna do something stupid but everything turned out okay in the end?"
"Okay? You broke my car!"
"Not completely.. it got fixed. Anyways, well, I may do something stupid again" I said.
She looked at me cautiously. I got into the river and grabbed on to a close by rock. The current was strong and quick, I was about 6 feet away from the small entrance I saw behind a bush in front of the mountainside. I slowly let go of the rock and grabbed a hold of another one, about two feet away. It was a long stretch, a painful one too, but I grasped it and pulled myself to the other side.
"What the heck are you doing???".
I ignored her and kept going until I reached the other side. I motioned for her to come over and at first she shook her head, but then she sighed and reluctantly crossed the river.
Once we were both there, I had an excited look on my face. "You need to see this! You know how we said that we needed a better, more hidden place to stay? This is perfect". We walked in to reveal a cave that someone had clearly previously lived in. There was a small fire pit dug out and two scrawny hand-made benches with a table in the middle of them. Off to the left there was a small tunnel that led to another cave, though that one was empty. There were some cracks in the mountain to give off enough light to see, but not too many cracks that would give our spot away.
"Wow..." Hazel said, "This is perfect!".
We both went back to grab our bags from the car, then parked it hidden across the road in some trees. The car was old and messed up enough for it to looked like someone had been in a car accident there. We went inside the cave and made ourselves at home. Things were finally starting to look up.
"Alright. Now that were settled in a, well for the most part, safe place, I'm gonna teach you how to shoot a gun filled with rock salt. And we're going to hunt this demon down and kill it".
I couldn't wait to get this burden off my shoulders. Nothing could stop me now, everything would be okay and I would just go back home. Well, that's what I thought. That's what I hoped for. But that wasn't the reality, that was my fantasy. One that wouldn't last for long...
