"I do not want to blind them, I just want them to blink a little." - The Emperor's New Clothes

***

Once upon a time, there lived a young girl named Meghan Folder. She was an attractive, seventeen year old girl with long, chocolate brown hair. She had the body of a model: tall and slim. She lived in a big house with both parents as university professors. She had many friends, could easily get a boyfriend, she was confident and it showed when she walked. She was athletic, smart, popular, little miss perfect. But there was one thing;

She wanted to be a he.

"It's really not that difficult to understand." he said to his friend Claire.

"Yes it is." Claire was his, very preppy, best friend. They had been friends for as long as they could remember and she always made him feel like he could talk to her about anything so he thought that coming out to her would be easy.

"What's so hard to understand?" He was defensive. His father was not supportive whatsoever while his mother and older brother stayed silent when the subject was brought up.

"You have a vagina so you're a girl, Meghan."

"My name is Weston."

Weston lived in a small town full of robots who followed each other in a herd. Everyone knew everyone so being the slightest bit different made you an easy target. But Weston was popular, liked by everyone, and never worried about bullies when he was Meghan. However, he quivered at the thought of what his peers would do to him if they ever found out about Weston.

Weston couldn't tell you exactly when he knew but he could tell you that he had the feeling his whole life.

"Your birth certificate says 'Meghan'. I don't understand why you wanna be a guy anyways. They're all dicks." Claire said. Weston didn't deny it, almost all the guys in their town were dicks and to be a part of that stereotype wouldn't make his transition any easier. But that wasn't the point.

Weston sighed and lowered his voice. "Look, I don't want to have this argument with you." He didn't think that coming out to his best friend would be this difficult. Before Claire could answer, he got up and left for home.

Weston stood in his washroom and stared at the reflection of his long, beautiful hair that his mom never let him cut. 'Any girl would be jealous of your hair.' His mom always said to him growing up. Yes, any girl would be jealous. He grabbed the scissors and started to cut his hair. He cut and styled it until he was satisfied. He stared in his mirror at the mid fade he just gave himself.

"Perfect."

Weston found some bandages in the drawer under the sink. He wrapped it around his chest to flatten the breast he'd longed to remove. The bandages were uncomfortable but he would manage until he could buy himself a proper binder. He put on a pair of faded blue jeans and a grey T-shirt he found in his brother's closet that had a small rose on the front pocket and said 'Thank you. Have a nice day' printed on the back in gold. He looked once more in the mirror, took a deep breath, and smiled.

"Meghan, dinner." His dad called from the dining room. He rolled his eyes and made his way downstairs, preparing himself for the reactions of his family. When he made it to the kitchen his father gasped. The shock vanished as quickly as it came and was replaced by anger.
