It was 7:30 at night. The night outside was crisp and cool, the heat of summer slowly ebbing away to the month of August. The moon was a sliver of silver in a black sky, stars shining like semi-precious stones in a dark secret cave. Leaves scuttled by on the paved road, scraping against the asphalt and blowing up on the nearby trees. The whole scenic view could be seen through the large window in the dining room, where Rick, Morty, Summer, and who I recently met, Jerry, all sat at the table.

I practically begged Beth to have me help her with dinner when she came home after work and saw me walking in the living room. Morty said I could use their shower and clean up, which I hopped on immediately. I still had blood and dirt smeared beneath my clothes after a full three days after the carnival. It made me feel better than I have all week, the water running down my back literally washing out my problems. But it still didn't change the fact that every time I closed my eyes, my brain played the horrible memories I've tried to run away from. I got out of the shower, still feeling gross and filthy. Unsure of where to go next, I went to the living room when Beth walked in. She was ecstatic that I was better, and she properly introduced herself and made me feel more than welcome in her house.

"Thank you so much for everything that you've done for me. I-I really can't thank you enough. I don't want to overstay my welcome, but-"

"Oh no! No, please. Any friend of my dad's is more than welcome to stay as long as they want in this house." I was about to correct her, but I decided to roll along with it. I wasn't going to ruin any fragile chances I had to a home.

"Uh...thank you again. Really, if there is anything you want me to do, please tell me. I don't want to be a freeloader while I'm here, which I kind of already feel like I am." My hands worked nervously against each other on the hem of my shirt, like they were battling for dominance. Beth shook her head quickly.

"No, no, no, please we have more than enough room and space for one more person. I'm sure once you get everything settled in your life you'll get back out there. After all you've gone through, I'm sure you could use a break." She smiled at me.

Which brought us here, later in the day. I forced Beth to have me help her in the kitchen making dinner, and after a while, she agreed. It was apparent no one really helped her out in this house after all the arm twisting I had to do to get her to accept my request. When we were making dinner, we talked about recent events and about how I was dealing with my loss. I didn't want me helping with dinner to turn into a therapy session, so I just told her I was okay and coping with everything fine. We made some hot food fairly quick, and Beth brought it out to the table. I stayed behind to grab forks and plates for the table.

"So we're just gonna let her live here? She's a stranger and Grandpa Rick and Morty have only met her a couple of times. I don't know how you all can be so trusting when we just got Grandpa back from prison." Summer said quietly, her voice in a hushed whisper.

"She's different, Summer. I trust her already. S-she healed me when I went to her pawnshop that one time, remember? I mean, if she wanted to kill me she could have done it then. I-if she wanted to kill me. Or kidnap me for like, interrogation and stuff." Morty said back to her even more hushed.

"Well look how Tammy turned out Morty! She was one of my good friends who married Rick's best friend, but she was undercover the whole time! She went to my high school and all the parties I hosted just to get close to the family, and I knew her personally. This is a complete stranger. She could be working for the Aalactic-Gay Ederation-Fay." Summer whisper-shouted.

"Come on Summer, tha-that's completely insane! Why would they send someone to live with us while they were working for them? Her work would be like, i-impossible to complete, and she's sleeping in your room! She has no privacy to send reports to her boss or something like that. Just get it out of your head Summer." Morty whisper-shouted back.
