Soon the warm summer started to fade and was replaced with much more chilly mornings. The warm breezes which flowed through the air were replaced with colder, northerly winds. The green leaves on the trees had started to get a slight yellow tinge to their once emerald-like colour. But one day, in particular, was taking ages to come round. Until finally the thirty-first of August came.
"Roseabell! You need to get up now if you want to have all your supplies in time!" My Aunt was screaming her head off.
I rolled over in bed to look at my clock, 6:30 am, a low groan escaped my lips as I rubbed the sleep from my eyes. I was not a morning person. What the hell was she doing waking me up this early? Finally I turned my head to look at the calendar which hung on my wall. Then it finally clicked. Today we were going down to London to get my supplies from Diagon Alley. A feeling of excitement and enthusiasm flooded over me but was soon replaced by an overwhelming sickly feeling in my stomach. A feeling of which I only knew too well. Great.
"Stop it, Rose. You are going to be fine." I muttered to myself determinedly as I now stood in front of my mirror trying to give myself a pep talk and ignore the dark, puffy eyes that stared back at me. I hadn't gotten much sleep the night before, my mind unable to stop thinking about all the possible bad outcomes of me going away. I hadn't been anywhere without my Aunt in twelve or thirteen so years and the thought of being alone by myself for pretty much the first time ever scared me. But I guess eventually we all have to grow up, even though I've felt like I've lived in a bubble for the majority of my life. But that bubble was now being popped and reality was flooding in and I couldn't help but find myself welcoming it. After all, we all have to lose the isolation to find our own way in the world and today was my first chance at doing so.
Quickly I pulled a burgundy, knitted jumper over my head before packing a small rucksack. Throwing it over my shoulder, I scurried downstairs into the lounge straightening my clothes so that my Aunt wouldn't fuss over me. My eyes scanned the small room of which I knew I wouldn't see for a good duration of time, slowly my gaze fell on my Aunt who stood, looking flustered, her hair looking slightly dishevelled.
"You didn't have to bring my trunk down you know? I could have done it." I said rolling my eyes at her perfect planning and inability to allow me to do anything without her interference.
"I didn't want you to tire yourself out, I don't want you feeling-"
"Aunt I'm fine, I haven't felt like that in a long time because of your wonderful potion, okay? It's all under control. I'm fit as a fiddle!" I interrupted her before she could tell me anymore reasons as to why I wasn't able to do certain things.
She sighed before excitedly clasping her hands together, "Right, now to get to Diagon Alley we're going to use the floo network as it is much quicker. Just follow me and we'll be there in seconds!" She chirped, smiling at me before she started making her way over to the large fireplace in the lounge.
We both hauled all of my luggage into the fireplace, the both of us cramming ourselves in whilst little bits of soot sprinkled over my clothes leaving black specks. My Aunt quickly gave me a reassuring smile as she grabbed a hand full of floo powder and threw it down at the floor, "The Leaky Cauldron!"
Green flames suddenly engulfed us which faded just as quickly as they had appeared before we both stepped out into an old looking pub filled with drinking witches and wizards talking in a hushed manner. Their focus either on the Daily Prophet or their heads were drooping as they dozed off drunkenly. Gradually we made our way through the tables to the bar to get our key for our room but I couldn't help but notice that everyone in the room had stopped talking and were now staring at me. I could feel my cheeks starting to burn red with embarrassment.
My Aunt quickly rushed me up to the room once we had the key. The room was full of antique furniture which looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years, dust floated in the air making me cough slightly as I allowed my eyes to adjust to the darkness of the small room. Twin beds were situated in the middle and two chairs sat close to the crackling fireplace. My attention turned to the murky window as the room began to shake, a train slowly passing by outside the building and I couldn't help but look in awe at all the muggles going about their day-to-day lives, completely oblivious to the world that coexisted so closely with their own.
I shook my head taking in everything I had missed whilst being secluded in Scotland. I was beginning to realise just how isolated my life had been. Looking up I saw my Aunt looking at me, trying to hide the concerned expression on her face.
"Are you feeling okay dear?" She asked tentatively as I forced a smile.
"I'm fine it's all just a bit... Well new to me, you know?" My Aunt nodded in response before she whipped me out of the room and led me to a wall outside The Leaky Cauldron, a look of confusion crossing my face as we stood there for a few moments whilst I stared blankly at my Aunt.
Has she lost the plot completely?
She gave me a wink before tapping on specific bricks with her wand. Gradually the bricks turned in and slotted into different spaces revealing a street which flowed like a river with people.
My Aunt turned to me, "Welcome to the Wizarding world Rose... This is Diagon Alley!"
I couldn't help but let a smile take over my face, all people of different sizes were swarming the street which was filled with all types of shops selling things ranging from animals, wands, brooms, dragon skins and much more.
"Right darling, I'm going to just pop off to get your school supplies for lessons. Why don't you go to Olivanders to get your wand?" I nodded in agreement before heading off down the street to the dark looking shop.
Pushing open the battered wooden door a dusty bell rang and filled the silent shop with a piercing ting.
A man with ghostly eyes and white frizzy hair appeared behind the counter, "Miss Ravenwood, I've been expecting a visit from you for many years. I remember helping your parents choose their wands, and if you have inherited your their powers-" He abruptly stopped mid-sentence as if realising he shouldn't have said something.
"Umm, err... Yes- You should find a wand in no time..." He stuttered before mumbling to himself, brief emotions flicking through his eyes as he disappeared down a corridor picking up boxes with wands inside.
He put a box down on the table and opened it up to reveal a beautiful wand, the crows feet at the corners of his eye's deepening as he smiled at me, handing me the wand, "Vinewood, with a unicorn tail-hair core at twelve and a half inches." I picked up the wand in my left hand cautiously, it felt so delicate, but I was soon taken a back as a wire of white light weaved and tightened around my arm, eventually fading into my skin. I stood there, my brows slightly furrowed as I still stared at my arm.
Is that supposed to happen?
"My, my you are already quite the witch I see." He said giving me a smile before packing my wand into a box and placing it in a paper bag. I smiled before exiting the shop a little faster than I had intended as I tried to make sense of what had just happened. Coming to the conclusion that the old man was either losing his marbles or I was.
Luckily, the rest of the shopping trip in Diagon Alley went by in a daze and soon enough we were back at The Leaky Cauldron having our dinner before both me and my Aunt went up into our room. The previously empty room, now filled with bags from the days shopping. I walked over to the bed and plopped down onto it, snuggling into the covers which were surprisingly comfortable and soft before I attempted to drift off to sleep. The sound of trains rumbling along past the window soothing me somewhat as I thought about the new and almost foreign world I would be thrown into tomorrow at Hogwarts...
