James

The morning has come and I am dreading the sun coming up. That means a new dreadful day is starting.

I dart out my front door so that I will not be late. I will never understand why high school needs to start this early. The sun is not even up yet and I am being forced to walk to school.

Luckily for me, I see that Roslyn, my neighbor, is on her way to school too.

Jackie and Julie join me as we rush to catch up to her

Jackie and Julie join me as we rush to catch up to her. She seems to be walking pretty fast for this hour of the morning. How is she awake enough right now to be able to process where she is going? Is it programmed into her well enough that she doesn't even have to think about it anymore?

"Do you mind if we join you on the way to school?" I ask Roslyn, hoping she will not mind. I don't know my way and I would love to tag along to make sure that I do not get lost on my way. Following her would be creepy and I have already made a bad impression. Maybe if I talk to her, I can ease the tension I created between us yesterday.

"I don't know if that's such a good idea James. I might bleed. Blood makes you queasy, doesn't it?" She asks me, looking up as she clutches onto the straps on her backpack. I stare at her, confused. What does she mean, blood makes me queasy?

As I am trying to figure out what this means, my sister, Jackie, answers my question for me by inserting her voice into my head. . 'Answer her! She thinks that's why you ran out yesterday.' Jackie elbows me. I nod. I totally get it now. I'm going to run with this idea of hers.

Afraid of blood... sure.

"Oh yeah, queasy. Yup." I laugh nervously, hoping Roslyn did not pick up on the long bit of silence between the two of us. It was just long enough to become awkward. "Sorry about yesterday. The blood was just too much."

Roslyn nods. "I get it." She looks straight ahead. "I know what you are."

"You do?" Jackie, Julie, and I ask at the same time, panicking that she has learned our secret already. It is our first day in this new town and someone already knows that we aren't human? Wow. I didn't think it would be that easy to tell us apart form everyone else. I especially didn't think it would happen this fast. We have barely even been here for three days. It is actually quite incredible how smart humans are.

Roslyn nods. "You are a hemophobiac. It means you are afraid of blood." She shrugs. "We all have things that scare us. Your is blood whereas mine is being attacked by large animals in the middle of the night. Mine is a more rational fear but who am I to judge?" She asks rhetorically.

Both me and my sisters are able to relax now. This confirms that Roslyn does not know what we are yet. We still have our identities in secret... for now.

"Um, about your attack, I actually had a question if you don't mind. I promise I won't run off this time." I lift my hands to my stomach and wring my fingers as I talk. I hope she does not get offended at all when I ask this. I never know what is going to set people off.

Whenever I move into a new town, I am always weary of meeting new people. They are strange and frankly, they scare me. Humans are so unpredictable and random. I just can't figure them out. What ails them? What keeps them going? Why are they the way they are?

Roslyn nods and looks up at me, giving me the okay to ask my question. "What attacked you? Are you sure it was a bear? Because it looks like-" I stop talking when I see that she is I longer beside me. She has stopped walking to stare into the woods we are passing by.

"What is it?" Julie asks, standing beside her as me and Jackie join them, staring into the rows and rows of trees.

"It just feels weird for some reason. I used to love these woods. Me and the neighborhood kids always used to play hide and seek here. Now, I get chills every time I pass them." Roslyn replies. I can see the little bumps on her skin. Something has spooked her.

I lift my head as I hear what I believe to be a growl. No, it couldn't be. Not at this hour. Really? Jackie and Julie heard the noise too. They are both on high alert, ready to strike if needed.

"This is where you got attacked?" Jackie asks. Roslyn nods, confirming our fears. Jackie looks up at me and nods her head. She is thinking exactly what I am thinking.

Werewolves.

That definitely was a growl that we heard. Is it possible that Roslyn did not hear it? I would have sworn the dirty animal was close enough to see. The growl seemed so close to us.

We need to leave before it decides to attack her again. Now I am sure that I know what attacked her. I believe the same werewolf that attacked her is now stalking her. It is going to want to hunt her because it failed to kill her the first time. It could strike at any moment, we really need to move.

"We need to get out of here." I say as I throw my arm around Roslyn and rush away, pulling her away with me.

"No thank you." Roslyn says as she pulls my hand off from around her shoulder. She turns around and glares at me. "If you want to put your arm around me, just ask." She scoffs and turns away to walk towards the school that is now in sight.

"Can I put my arm around you?" I jog to catch up to her. She has gone quite fast now that I have offended her. If she just did that back there, I wouldn't have had to put my arm around her in the first place.

"No." She says sternly as she pushes the door open and enters the school.
