Jackie

Zack digs his heels into the leaves, stopping himself when he sees the wolf who attacked Roslyn, standing over my brother, tearing him apart. James hardly fights back as the wolf's large fangs pull his skin from his body.

Zack holds his hand out to stop me from getting any closer.

"No!" I whisper, pushing Zack's hand out of the way, running over and grabbing the wolf's body. I lift him into the air and throw him as far as I can, not caring what Zack sees or thinks of me. I can't just stand there and let James die.

I bend down and touch my brother's face, hoping I am not too late.

He is in bad shape but he is still conscious. I quickly examine his body, hoping to not find any lethal scratches. Thankfully, he will recover from his wounds. I grab on to James and help him to his feet, leaning him up against a tree until he is stable enough to stand on his own. "Ro-Roslyn." James coughs up blood, wiping his mouth before looking around.

My eyes dart around the forest floor, searching for the missing Roslyn. I find her lying on her side with some leaves covering her. I rush to her side and carefully lay her on her back. I smack Roslyn's cheeks. "No no no!" At first my efforts were frantic but gentle. But as time passes, I become more frantic and even less gentle with her. Before long, I am leaving palm-stinging red marks on Roslyn's cheeks in my efforts to wake her.

"I wasn't fast enough." James' voice aches as he speaks. He is broken. I know we are thinking the same thing but neither one of us want to admit it or say it out loud.

"You can't be dead Roslyn! You can't!" I shout, hoping she hears my frantic cries and opens her eyes to see me. "You can't leave me alone with these boys! I can't do this by myself! I can't handle these boys without you! Come on Roslyn!" I shake my head. She is still not responding. I think of ways I can help her.

I begin giving Roslyn CPR. I've seen it done on TV and I'm not sure how it works but I know it works for the actors.

Zack walks over hesitantly as I fight to save Roslyn's life. He leans down and places his fingers in her neck. "She's dead Jacqueline. There's nothing we can do now." He leans closer to me, touching my shoulder gently. "You have to stop that now. There's nothing you can do."

"There's always something we can do." I look up at James, hope filling my eyes.

"No." James' voice cracks. He clears his throat. "No. Absolutely not."

"James! We have to!" I argue. "I can't let her die!"

"She's already dead Jacqueline." Zack tries to explain. "It's not like you can bring her back to life. You aren't a doctor."

"No, I'm not. But I can still save her life."
