James
My doorbell rings but I do not take my eyes off of Roslyn. She is so involved in her reading she probably forgets I am even in the room with her. I love watching her read. Some would say it is like watching paint dry but to me, it has become my favorite thing. She is so intrigued In the book. She is completely lost in the world it creates.
I would watch her all day. In fact, I wish I could. I could get just as lost watching her as she is in reading. She is beautiful and I don't think she knows it. But she is most beautiful when she is not trying to impress anyone.
Sometimes, I think she tries too hard.
"Don't you want to get that?" She asks, not lifting her head out of the book. I am surprised she even heard it. I thought she was completely unaware of her surroundings at this point.
"No. It can't be that important. We don't know anyone around here other than you and your family. It is probably just someone selling something." I shrug. I would much rather stand here and watch her read than answer the stupid door and talk to whoever is behind it.
'James!' My mother yells at me internally. 'Answer the goddamned door!'
I sigh and stand myself off the bookcase. "I'm going to get the door. Want to come?" I ask Roslyn as I pass through my doorway. She shrugs and follows me. I guess that is a yes.
I open the door and smile at the girl standing on my porch in a short, floral dress. "Hi, I'm not sure if you remember me at all, I'm E-"
"Elise. Hi. How are you?" I ask her, pulling her in for a tight embrace. I haven't seen her in hundreds of years. I honestly thought she was dead. She disappeared and I never saw her again. Until today, that is.
"I'm well. I just relocated here. I guess I'm your new neighbor." I nod as she speaks. I didn't know the house on the other side of me was for sale. I guess it isn't anymore.
Elise turns to Roslyn and grabs her hand. "Hello." She smiles as she shakes her hand. Roslyn is very confused. I don't even have to read her mind to know that.
"Come in. Please come in." I smile and move out of her way. Elise joins us inside. "Roslyn and I were just reading some books."
"Yeah, which is why this isn't a good time to hang out. Sorry!" Roslyn opens the door and tries to get Elise to leave.
"Oh! No, it's fine. She can stay. I don't mind the extra company." I smile at Elise. I have missed her so much.
"Well, three is a crowd so I think I'll be going now. Bye. It was nice meeting you." Roslyn waves and exits my house, taking the book with her. I laugh awkwardly and smile at Elise, hoping she wasn't offended by Roslyn's Soddy exit.
"She's? Your girlfriend?" Elise asks, her shoulders dropping. The sparkle that was once in her eyes fades quickly.
"I guess the simple answer is no." I reply, running my fingers though my hair.
"Good." She smirks and grabs on to the back of my head, pulling me in for a kiss. If I had a beating heart, it would have stopped as soon as she touched me. It would flutter uncontrollably when she looks at me. Chills run through my already cold body. Her lips are so soft. My hands slip down the curve of her back and rest on her hips as I pull her closer. My face bends down to hers, our bodies molding together perfectly. We move in unison.
Our lips pull apart for one moment, only to return again. "I've missed you." She whispers as Our lips part again. My world explodes as we touch. I tighten my grip on her, pulling her even closer to my body. Her hungry mouth melts into mine. The chill I feel every day suddenly disappears and I am filled with warmth. Flames ignite in my body.
Though technically I am dead, I have never felt so alive.
