Arthur sat patiently waiting for Adelaide to awaken; he had not long gotten back from fetching the Fickle-seed flowers and rushed to be by her side again. Adelaide was looking somewhat better; she was breathing a little easier and the colour had begun to return to her cheeks. He was still extremely worried about her; Arthur had promised Adelaide's father that he would take care of her and keep her safe. So far he was not doing such a great job. Arthur would not admit it, but he really did love Adelaide and it would break his heart if she was to come to any permanent harm under his watch.
Merlin was very worried that the spell he used would not work, and Adelaide would die; he had never used the spell before and was even unsure if it was the right spell. So far it seemed to be working. He couldn't even share his concerns with Arthur who thought that the mixture of Fickle-seed flowers and herbs, found in Gaius' cabinet, were making Adelaide better.
Later that day Arthur decided to move Adelaide to her chambers, figuring she would be more comfortable there. As Arthur laid Adelaide gently down on her bed, her eyes flickered open. "Hi" she whispered, "what happened?" "How are you feeling?" Arthur asked sitting down on the bed. "My head hurts a bit, but I'll be alright" Adelaide said propping herself up higher on the pillow. "Do you want me to go get Gaius?" Arthur asked. "No I'm fine but thank you for asking" replied Adelaide sweetly. "I have to go now as my father wants to talk to me, I will be back later. If you need anything just ask Amelia to come and find me." said Arthur, getting up and kissing Adelaide gently on the forehead.
Arthur entered the royal dining room where his father was waiting. Arthur found his father sat the table waiting for him to arrive. "Arthur, Lady Adelaide has been injured twice under your care!" said Uther sternly. "I have my knights out looking for the wizard who used this magic to hurt her" said Arthur feeling sorrow at the disappointment in his father's voice. "You are supposed to look after her, yet you are not doing a very good job!" Uther said sounding even angrier. "I ........"Arthur started to reply but was cut off by Adelaide. "It's not Arthur's fault. I should have listened to Arthur when he told me to stay in my chambers. So don't blame him, if anyone should be in trouble it should be me" Adelaide said walking slowly to the table and standing next to Arthur.
"Adelaide you shouldn't be out of bed" Arthur said. "No Arthur, I'm not letting you get in trouble for something you didn't do" argued Adelaide. "Adelaide, since you're new here I will let you off this one time, but the next time you disobey Arthur when he's trying to protect you, you will be in trouble" declared Uther. "Of course my lord" Adelaide said with attitude as she turned and walked from the room.
Arthur ran after her; he needed to talk to her about how she had just spoken to his father. "It was dumb of you to confront the king like that Adelaide" he said in a concerned tone. "Well like I said to the king, I'm not letting you get in trouble for something you didn't do! He should learn to stop passing judgement before he knows the facts!" she stated as she stared defiantly into Arthur's eyes before turning and marching towards to courtyard. "Adelaide you really should go back your chambers" Arthur said with concern in his voice. "I'm fine, I don't want to sit around and do nothing" declared Adelaide as she continued down the long hallway.
Arthur ran to catch up with Adelaide and very nearly crashed into both her and Merlin as he rounded the corner. Adelaide stood for a moment eyeing the two young men, then with a glint of amusement in her eyes, she stated "Don't you boys have something better to do than chase me around the castle". Arthur and Merlin stood for a moment, unsure of how to respond. "Merlin, do you know where Amelia is?" Adelaide asked to avoid a sassy reply from the young prince. "I believe she is helping Guinevere in the kitchen, do you want me to get her for you?" questioned Merlin, desperate to leave the awkward situation that he suddenly found himself in. "No its fine. Can you show me where she and Guinevere are?" asked Adelaide. "Or coarse my lady, follow me" Merlin said rushing ahead.
Adelaide followed Merlin to the kitchen, where Amelia and Guinevere were washing the dishes. "Hello ladies, how are you doing?" greeted Adelaide. "Oh hello my lady it's a pleasure to finally meet you" said Guinevere as she curtsied before the Princess. "It's a pleasure to meet you too Guinevere, please call me Adelaide" said Adelaide as she smiled at young girl before her. "Can I help you with the dishes?" asked Adelaide. Guinevere looked both shocked and concerned, "Oh no my lady, the King would be very displeased if you did that" fretted Guinevere. "Well the King doesn't need to know, does he" smiled Adelaide. Adelaide rolled up the sleeves and began to wash the pans that were stacked by the sink. Merlin glanced over at Amelia before quietly leaving the kitchen.
It was about an hour later when Merlin returned to the kitchen to tell Adelaide that dinner was being served. Adelaide said goodbyes to Guinevere and Amelia, and went with Merlin to meet Arthur in the dining room. As they walked Adelaide casually said to Merlin, "So Merlin, what's going on with you and Amelia?" Merlin turned suddenly to look out of the window to hide his hot face and said, "I-I-I, don't know what you're talking about. There's nothing going on with me and Amelia". Adelaide smiled and said, "You know Merlin, you're not allowed to lie to royals. You really are very cute together" as she sat at in her chair at the large dining table. Arthur, who had caught the tale end of the conversation, smiled at Merlin as he too took his seat.
Later that night as Adelaide lay in bed, she smiled to herself as she recalled her conversation with Arthur earlier; she enjoyed being sassy with him and loved the way he appeared to not have a clue how to handle her.
Arthur was also smiling as he lay in his bed that night; it certainly was going to be fun being married to Adelaide, he loved her independence and hot-headed attitude.
Merlin lay in his bed and groaned; it sure was going to be difficult to look after this feisty pair!
