Chapter Six
Adelaide was nervous to tell her kingdom about her leaving Adreabeth. She knew a lot of her people would be upset. Adreabeth and Camelot had been enemies for so long, in fact very few people remembered a time when they were friends. From the beginning, Adelaide had been worried that her people would not see Arthur as a friend, only the enemy.
It was later that day, as Adelaide looked out at the crowd, that her father told the history between Adreabeth and Camelot. When Borin and Uther were young, Adreabeth and Camelot were allies. The rift began when Borin was just 17 years of age. Adelaide and Arthurs grandfathers had fought many fights together, and the war against Medland was no different. Borin lead his soldiers to where Uther and his men were supposed to be so they could unite their army's against Medland. Uther and his father did not show up, and Adreabeth lost a lot of men that night. Since that very night Adelaide's grandfather declared war on Camelot. Arthur's grandfather never got the chance to explain that the sudden death of his beloved queen had prevented him from being there.
Adelaide was right, the people of Adreabeth were not happy. After the announcement she went for a walk through the town. There she met a group of older woman who would have been around went Camelot became an enemy. The women called Adelaide's name, "Adelaide, your father can't send you to Camelot, we're at war with them" stated one of the woman. "No they signed a peace treaty" Adelaide said feeling her angry grow within. "I can't believe you father is making you marry him" said another women pointing to Arthur who was exiting the palace. "Arthur's not like his father" Adelaide stated, getting madder. "He's a Pendragon, all Pendragons are pure evil" said a woman who was standing at the side of the group with her young daughter clutching at her skirt.
Adelaide marched away and went to her chamber to cool down. She thought about what the woman had said, was she right? Was Arthur just pretending to be nice? Adelaide did not believe the women. Yet the questions continued to fill her head and occupy her mind.
Adelaide remained in her chambers for the rest of the daylight hours until a scream from the court yard pulled her from her thoughts. As she rushed into the court yard she saw the woman who had called the Pendragons evil. She was screaming something about her daughter.
The woman was crying and her body was covered in cuts and bruises. Adelaide saw her mother at the lady's side, her arms around her, attempting to calm her and find out what was wrong. Through the women's sobs, Adelaide heard the woman saying that someone had taken her daughter. Suddenly a distant scream could be heard. Arthur, who had been watching stern faced from the side of the gathering crowd, turned on his heels and ran to the town gates. There he saw a man, only a couple of years older than himself, with the young girl thrown over his shoulder.
Upon seeing Arthur the man immediately dropped the girl to the ground, and turned to face Arthur with murder in his eyes. Arthur reacted immediately by drawing his sword and lunging towards the stranger. The man, who knew from the look in Arthur's eyes, that he was in trouble, immediately dragged the girl from the floor and placed his sword across her throat. "If anyone moves I will cut her throat" he yelled. As Arthur stood, sword drawn, he glimpsed Adelaide sneaking in from behind. The man, who also sensed someone behind, swung round swinging his sword wildly at Adelaide. Arthur saw his opportunity and jumped on the man from behind, knocking him off guard. The man hit the ground with such force that his sword fell to ground and Arthur held him to the floor with his foot; his sword at his throat.
As the guards led the man away, the young girl ran to her mother sobbing. The crowd watched in silence as the women turned to Arthur and quietly said "You saved my daughter Pendragon, and that I shall never forget".
As the crowd dispersed, Adelaide smiled, as she heard their whispers. Maybe they were wrong about Arthur Pendragon, maybe he would be the perfect husband for their beloved princess.
