"The less you say, the more your words will matter."
chapter 5: antlia
I CLIMBED THE LADDER WITH A SIGH, Clarke was run off her feet and I offered to take over. My mother had been a nurse after all, I wasn't completely senseless. As I entered the second floor I spotted Monty right away. He sat right beside Jasper watching him intently as if it were the last time he'd see him.Clarke however paced back and forward at the far side of the room, dark bags were evident under her eyes as well as the pale colour that had taken to her skin.
"I'll take over for awhile, go get some rest or eat. You need it." I suggested as I walked over to sit on the other side of Jasper.
"I shouldn't leave-" Clarke tried, but I gave her a look that told her not to argue with me.
She left the room quietly and Monty looked at me curiously as I grabbed the cloth that sat beside Jasper's head, I dipped it in the cold water that had been gathered from a nearby stream. I gently rubbed it along his forehead in hopes of cooling him down a bit.
"Where'd you learn to do that?" Monty questioned and I looked over towards him with wide eyes.
"M- my mother was a nurse." I stuttered out and Monty gave me a small smile not pressing any further thankfully.
Jasper's eyes cracked open and he let out a small yelp at first, the wound had been cleaned and Clarke had tried her best to stitch it with the little to none supplies we had. Suddenly, Jasper had started screaming and shaking violently, I quickly ran to his side tried to keep him calm.
There was nothing to do, but hope his wound would heal. This wasn't the first time I had heard Jasper's screams, they had gotten particulate worse over the days. In fact, people complained constantly while some even threatened to do something about him, but I knew Clarke, Finn, Octavia or Monty wouldn't let that happen. I didn't blame them, I was on their side too. I stood up and Monty looked at me with wild eyes.
"Evie, what are you doing? Help him." Monty ordered as he watched his best friend shaking with worry.
I grabbed the blade that sat beside Jasper on a small, square table.
"Monty I'll be right back, just try to calm him down." I called over my shoulder as I scrambled down the ladder.
I sprinted over to the fire pit with the blade gripped tightly in my hand, Clarke appeared at my shoulder with a worried glance.
"What are you doing? Cauterising the wound, that might work." Clarke agreed as she shouted at Finn and Octavia to follow us back to Jasper.
I climbed the ladder with the scalding knife clutched between my fingers, Monty threw me a worried glance as his eyes landed on the knife. Remainders of the plant Clarke had used to sooth Jasper's pain were littered around his chest. I turned to Clarke and handed her the knife, she gave me a confused glance but I only pointed at Jasper.
"You're the doctor." I spoke, in truth I was afraid I would mess it up.
Clarke nodded and stepped closer to Jasper despite the protests of Octavia and Monty.
"You can't do this! You'll kill him!" Octavia shouted as Finn held her waist.
"What the hell is going on here?" Bellamy boomed as he stepped up through the hatch.
"Listen O, you trust me right? This will work, it's the only way to close the wound. If we don't do this, Jasper could bleed out." I assured her.
"Fine do it, but I won't be a part of this." Octavia spat as she walked to the other side of the room.
