AFTER LAST NIGHT, EVERYONE was looking at me differently

AFTER LAST NIGHT, EVERYONE was looking at me differently. Not that I minded, but it was a strange attention that I hadn't been used to.

Today at school, it was the day of the spelling bee. The spelling bee was, surprisingly, a little fun for me. In my old town, I was champion every year. English was my best subject; I always seemed to succeed. So, today I was going to prove to Gilbert Blythe that I wasn't just some dumb blonde.

Anne was now back in school, causing everyone's attention to drag to her. I liked that everyone's attention was off of me. Well, almost everyone's attention.

Gilbert hasn't taken his eyes off of me since I told him I didn't have anyone that really cared about me. Sure, I have the Barrys, and you would think they would care. But Diana has taken a liking to Anne, and I rarely see her anymore. Only when we are both at home, which rarely happens.

But I chose to forget all of that for now and decided to focus on the spelling bee.

So far, I was doing well. I made it into one of the final rounds—only four of us remaining. Anne, Prissy, Gilbert, and I.

"Prissy, spell delightful." Mr. Phillips said, smirking at Prissy.

"D-e-l-i-t-e..." Prissy spelled, then sighed.

"I'm sorry, that is incorrect." He said, watching every move that Prissy made while walking back to her seat.

"Gilbert, spell engagement." Mr. Phillips said, looking straight at Prissy Andrews, who looked down shyly.

"E-n-g-a-g-e-m-e-n-t." Gilbert spelled, smirking to himself then glancing over at me.

"Correct." Mr. Phillips said.

I immediately shot my eyes away from Gilbert and over to Mr. Phillips, whose eyes were locked on Prissy's.

"Samantha, spell gorgeous." Mr. Phillips called.

"G-o-r-g..." I glanced over at Gilbert, who was looking at me innocently.

My stomach dropped. How could somebody stand there and look so beautiful?

"U..." I shut my eyes. That was not the right answer.

"Incorrect." Mr. Phillips smirked. "That's a surprise."

I took one more glance at Gilbert, who's face flashed with confusion. I shook my head and looked down, taking a seat in the back of the classroom.
