An Unfamiliar Feeling

Lily

Lily Evans let out a loud yawn, every joint cracking as she stretched out her arms and legs. Glancing around, she realised that the library was now nearly empty, having been rammed with stressed 7th years. Just a couple months into her final year, the teachers had already ramped up the workload and Lily had noticed the circles under her eyes getting darker with every late-night study session.

The clock on the wall displayed only half past eleven, but her eye lids were starting to feel heavy and the last four pages of her Charms book were refusing to stick in her brain no matter how many times she reread them.

Giving in, she packed up her books and slung her bag over her shoulder. She decided to take a detour back, seeking the small cosy nook by a large window where she would often sit and watch the view of Hogwarts at night.

She swung open the door in front of the nook and reached to pull her back over, but hesitated when she found that it was already occupied. A couple were sat there, snogging.

"Oh, um, sorry," she said quickly before recognising the familiar unruly dark hair of one of them. Something unfamiliar stirred in her stomach.

The couple pulled apart and turned to see her. Potter's eye widened, his fingers still tangled in the hair of the girl, who shot Lily an embarrassed smile. Potter's hand dropped and he cleared his throat, his lips and cheeks flushed red. Lily quickly averted her gaze.

"Sorry!" she blurted, hastily pulling her bag back over her shoulder and reaching for the door handle. "I didn't mean to..."

She trailed off as the door opened and quickly stepped through it, closing it firmly behind her.

Her heart raced in her chest and her stomach churned as she hurried toward the Gryffindor tower.

She didn't understand the strange feeling inside of her. She had witnessed Potter snogging girls before and never gave it a second thought. But why did her stomach feel queasy now?

"I'm just sleep-deprived," she muttered to herself, shaking her head to rid it of thoughts.

But that night, as she lay in bed, the image of Potter's flushed cheeks and pink lips lingered unwelcome in her mind.
