Spin the Bottle

James

The Gryffindor Common Room buzzed with music and laughter as the students celebrated a quidditch victory over Ravenclaw. A win which would firmly place them in the running for the cup.

"You were brilliant Potter," a girl from the year above called, passing the Marauders, who were handing out some Firewhiskey that Sirius had smuggled from their dorm room.

Remus rolled his eyes and Peter snorted into his cup while James grinned at the girl and winked.

Sirius, who was already a few drinks in, turned to James and batted his eyelashes, teasingly.

"Oh yes you were tremendous Prongs." his voiced mimicking a girl, though slightly slurred. "You just looked so dreamy when you threw that quaffle Jamsey."

James shoved him, laughing, before pouring the Firewhiskey into his own drink and downing it.

A few shots later, they were sat in a circle of 6th and 7th years as someone had suggested Spin the Bottle. Sirius was looking particularly smug as he had just kissed a very pretty 7th year.

He spun the bottle and it landed on James.

With a michevious grin, Sirius sat back, and draped an arm around the shoulders of the girl next to him.

A couple of the girls giggled and watched James spin the bottle, casting him flirtatious looks.

James' eyes involuntarily found Lily Evans, who hadn't noticed whose turn it was and was laughing at something Marlene had whispered to her. James' breath caught at the sight of her bright smile. He willed himself to look back at the spinning bottle, which actually made him feel a bit queasy, in his intoxicated state. James' heart pounded as he watched the bottle slow down and reach its destination.

Pointing towards the exact person he had both hoped for and dreaded.

His eyes widened as a chorus of chuckles let out from the group. One boy let at a mocking "Oooooo". It was common knowledge for all 6th years that Potter used to ask Evans out all the time and she constantly rejected him. James looked up to Lily who was looking confused. The boy sat next to her said something in her ear and her eyes shot to James' then back at the bottle.

"It's ok, we'll spin again," James said hastily but Lily sighed and shook her head.

"As much as I dislike you Potter, rules are rules."

James gulped, trying desperately to appear calm, which was proving difficult in his slightly intoxicated state. He shrugged casually, as Lily walked through the circle to him, refusing to look at her face, dreading the look of disgust she no doubt was displaying.

He felt her drop down front of him and he glanced up, his heart beating faster at her lips and cheeks flushed with alcohol, competing with her flaming hair which was slightly messy in her tipsy state. Her green eyes shone and he could count every freckle on her face as she leant in.

Their lips touched.

James' insides exploded.

His mind went blank as he went into sensory overload, trying to feel everything at once-  the touch of her lips, the warmth of her body heat, the tickle of her hair on his cheek. His pounding heart was loud enough to drown out the room around them.

She quickly pulled back, her expression unreadable, and left James sitting there with wide eyes. He coughed and quickly snapped himself out of it then reached for his drink.

Lily walked back to her spot, but after giving him the smallest of glances, her cheeks ever so slightly more flushed.
