I landed on all four trembling paws with a menacing growl, but then I recognized his scent. I came to a sliding stop, and stood face to face with Toryn. He was completely calm, his arms folded, and a small smirk on his surprisingly arrogant face. His gorgeous human body was unharmed as he stood before me, if anything his deep black hair was slightly ruffled. Even in wolf form, I had the unnerving urge to brush those dark strands out of his amused blue eyes.
Another growled ripped itself from my throat, but I managed to sound less threatening and more annoyed. I heard Ren give a breathless laugh of relief behind me and Toryn glanced at him. "Toryn, you shouldn't be so confident" he chuckled. "I thought for sure that she would rip you to shreds." He rolled his eyes. "I hardly think she has the guts or strength to do it." A few different ways to kill Toryn ran through my mind, but I shook myself. He was just goading me. He seemed to find it amusing to get me all worked up and I refused to give him the satisfaction.
His small smile vanished, irritation and even the signs of anger swirled in that blue gaze. "You should have left when I told you to" he shouted in my face, his voice barely containing the Alpha command. I considered his words. Did he want me to leave because he knew the hunters would attack, or for his own selfish reasons?
"Now look at the danger you have put my pack in" he snarled. I winced. "You brought those monsters here and now I'm going to have to clean up your mess" he accused, and it looked like he was desperately trying to regain his cool and confident composure, but his words brought a couple different emotions to me. He was going to fight the hunters? So many of them? Wouldn't he get killed?
I gaped, partly in shock that he would try to fight, and partly in fear that he would be destroyed. I vaguely wondered why I cared if he died. "Don't look so shocked, Lavine" he told me. "Those fools have been following you everywhere haven't they? Did you really think that the hunters wouldn't follow you here?" he asked, not so gently. A surprised yelp escaped me. How did he know they were following me?
He smiled at my reaction. "That's right, little girl. They've been hunting you down since you first turned into a wolf. Coming here won't be any different!" he snapped. I knew he was upset because he had just been trying to protect his pack, hadn't I tried to do this same for mine? The only difference was that I knew Toryn was too stubborn to turn from a fight. Even if it was a fight for survival. I was torn between joining him or taking Igi and running.
He began to frown as if he could see the resolve in my eyes. "You can't run now" he told me calmly, persuasively. "You can't leave Igi behind" he told me. A demand. I growled. I would never leave Igi behind!
He shook his head at my defiance. "You don't understand!" Ren shouted from behind me. I peeked over my shoulder at him, holding Igi like a glass vase. Delicate and fragile. "You can't take her" he pleaded. I gazed at him, confused. I could take her wherever I wanted! How dare he tell me to leave a member of my pack behind! A string of growls erupted in my throat, my muzzle twitching.
"She's my mate" he whispered, glancing down at her with an emotion I hadn't yet experienced and would never be able fathom. Love. I had seen it once or twice. Sometimes I had seen the stirrings of love in Milo's eyes whenever he looked at me. It was such a strange emotion, and I was more than a little shocked to see it on Ren's face.
"Our packs share a bond now that you'll have to face" Toryn continued. "Do you really want to rip Igi away from something like this? A mate's bond is uncontrollable and if they are seperated they will both endure intense emotional and mental torment" he explained, his frown quickly turning into a glare. "...And I am not willing to let anyone put my brother through that kind of torture! So help us fight these fools" he demanded.
I was so confused, this new information flowing through me. There was more to werewolves than I ever expected. Mates? From what I've heard, how would Toryn even begin to explain that complicated subject? I knew he was hiding more than that though. Much, much more.
My questions would have to wait till later though, because I could already smell the hunters scent in the air. They were closing in. "What'll it be? Death by me, or a possible victory against these demons?" Toryn raised an eyebrow. It must have been that pull, that reason that I was so infatuated with him, it must be why he bothers me so much that made my decision.
Fine, you damn dog, I consented. Bowing my head so he knew I was in agreement. I peeked at his face. He was really genuinely smiling at me, and my heart nearly leapt out of my mouth. He was so beautiful and perfect. I blinked quickly, managing to refrain from drooling. He must have been hiding more fear of facing the hunters alone than I thought because that smile was drenched in relief.
With hardly a second to waist, he burst into a wolf. I'd forgotten how powerful looking he was in wolf form. As black as the night, he towered over me, a look of determination flickering in his eyes. The rain clung to his fur, making him glisten and- oh god, what is happening to me? I whined, holding back a whimper.
Where was the strong Lavine? The one who could protect her pack so well and didn't fall to an Alpha's feet in awe? I sighed. This was going to be a long fight.
I watched Toryn glance at Ren. Ren nodded. They must be communicating. Ren tightened his hold on Igi and took off towards the school. A protectivness for Igi almost sent me after him, but I knew he was just trying to get her to saftey. I turned and faced the oncoming hunters, wondering where the hell Milo was.
I heard a familiar crashing through the trees. Lavine are you okay? I'm coming, Milo shouted, breathless. Ah speak of the devil, I growled just as he came into sight, narrowly dodging the trees. He slid to a halt at my side, panting. Where were you!? I screeched.
Hey come on! he protested, annoyed. I got cornered back there. They were coming at me at all sides. It took all I had to escape! he retorted and guilt gripped me. He had been attacked and I looked over him noticing small cuts here and there, hidden by his gray fur. I whimpered and nuzzled his face, licking a small cut by his ear. I'm sorry, I told him, trying to be sincere but the low growling I heard Toryn make was distracting.
I glanced at him but he looked emotionless staring ahead, waiting for the hunters. I'll be fine, they were following me and with you two wolves here, it won't be long until they get us, he warned, but he rubbed his face against mine affectionately. With Milo at my side, I felt a little calmer.
I glanced at Toryn again and found that he was watching us. He quickly looked away but I noticed a flash of something in his sparkling blue eyes. Something I didn't think an arrogant Alpha like him would be capable of. Pain.
