Jace's POV
The last three days had been the longest of my life. This morning she'd woken up with a fever. It wouldn't be long now. I knew I had to do something, but as I hid, shrouded in shadows at the edge of the forest, staring up at her dimly lit window, I hesitated, torn.
I should leave, but every fiber of my being longed to lead me to her room, where she laid asleep in her bed, tossing restlessly. I wanted to see her lovely long brown curls frame her face, which was hauntingly beautiful, and would surely lead my quest to demise. I shook myself. I shouldn't even be thinking like this. She hadn't even turned into a wolf yet and I had more important priorities.
I whirled around, turning my back on her home, and began to walk away, but the events of the last three days blanketed my thoughts, urging me to go back for her. My wolf whimpered for her. No, I growled. I did not come to America for love, I came for one girl, and one girl only. And she was not the girl that slept in the house behind me. She was somewhere beyond...she had to be. I tried to picture what she would look like. Long silvery blonde hair...and vibrant green eyes that would match mine...her skin as pale as the moon. She would be slender and small like her mother, but more powerful than any other wolf I'd ever known.
I was determined to bring her back home...or rather to what was left of home. It had been years since I'd been there. Just one short week ago, I'd overheard two wolves speaking of going to America. They hadn't noticed me in that little French cafe, thankfully my powers aloud me to keep my scent hidden from them. Good thing, because otherwise that cafe would be history. I remembered listening into their conversation.
The tall one had been slightly furious, but determined to go there. I listened harder, curious. He mentioned following a pure werewolf there and that had surprised me. There weren't very many pure werewolves left out in the open where they could be so easily picked off one by one. He'd said that her green eyes were different from any other pure werewolf he'd ever seen. He was surprised by how fair her skin was. His piercing blue eyes often flashed when he spoke of her.
I followed them to America, but unfortunately lost them along the way. All I knew is that they were headed to California, and I knew she had to be there...somewhere. Then just three short days ago I ran into a rather large problem.
Maybe it was fate, or maybe it was the physcic and emotional bond that draws mates together, whatever the cause, I'd been stuck watching this girl for the past three days. She'd drawn me to her like a moth to a flame, and I never left, no matter how hard I tried.
She was one of the most beautiful humans I'd ever seen. I usually cared nothing for humans. They were mortal and weak...but this girl- she was radiant and her brown eyes shined like stars outlined with a thick fringe of black lashes. She was strong...and soon she would no longer be a human.
She hadn't seen me yet, where I carefully watched from afar. Because I was a pure werewolf I'd already had two run in's with the annoying human hunters hired to kill us. I'd disposed of them easily. They didn't know exactly what pure werewolf they were dealing with. It would take an army of those damn humans to kill me.
I quickly turned around when I heard her whimper softly, yanking me from my thoughts. It wasn't long after I found her, that I realized she was going to be a werewolf...and she was going to change into her wolf form very soon. I'd come to her home again, not only to watch her sleep like I had for the past two nights, but because I knew that she'd change tonight, and I had to be there to help her. It was always scary, and painful, and exhilerating that first time.
I remembered how scared I had been when it happened. I didn't want my mate to be alone when she changed.
I heard another whimper and then a panicked gasp from her room. Without a second thought, I ran for her home, and jumped up onto her balcony. I didn't want her changing in the house. Not with her human father just sleeping a few doors down. I assumed, with the lack of her mother's presence, that her werewolf blood came from her mother's side of the family.
I quickly opened the window and found Kyra on the floor of the room, holding her stomach and kneeling over, her long brown hair brushing against the ground. I anxiously swept her into my arms, and she gasped again. "Wha-" she began but cut off with a scream as I fled to the balcony and jumped from it. I quickly clamped my hand down on her mouth, and she continued to scream and shout in surprise and fear.
I glanced down at her horrified brown eyes. "It's okay" I promised. "I'm a friend." I rushed through the forest, until I decided that her screams wouldn't reach the house. I released her and she wiggled out of my arms, landing heavily on the ground. She moaned, but quickly got to her feet, frantically looking around, realizing that we were alone. Her eyes raked over me, watchful, waiting for me to do something. "What do you want?" she growled.
I stood before her, my hands shoved in my pockets, smiling. "Nothing. I'm just here to help" I told her truthfully. She looked into my green eyes, her own burning. Then she pressed a hand to her head, hissing. "What's happening to me?" she whispered.
I frowned. "Kyra- don't-" she suddenly cried out and fell to her knees. My wolf howled in the presence of his mate's pain. I took a hesitant step forward. I'd want to keep my distance when she turned into a wolf. She moaned again, her fingers digging into the ground, fisting the damp grass.
"Listen" I demanded in a serious voice. "Don't fight it. It will just make the pain worse" I explained while she writhed against the ground, panting. Her scent was changing...turning into something familiar. Her fever was rising, and I could feel her heat reach me from ten feet away.
She grunted and cursed and I knew her world would be turning red. I knew the agony...the very real power that would build up until she released it. "That's right" I encouraged. "Just breathe."
She clawed at the ground, and I could tell that she was trying to keep from screaming. "Let go" I whispered. With a roar her clothes shredded and she burst into a wolf.
She stood there for a second, shocked and overcome with her new body. She was beautiful, her fur was a dark mahogany brown with flecks golden autum colors. Her eyes were the only thing that remained the same, soft but distant as she tried to make sense of what had happened.
When she did finally focus on me, she began to growl, baring her teeth and stalking forward. "Lovely" I muttered and lifted my hands in an innocent gesture. "Now calm down" I chuckled and when she howled I winced.
"Listen I know you're upset, but you need to calm down" I told her, drawing out my words as if she were a child. This just seemed to piss her off even more. She kept coming towards me, her ears flat on her head, her growls making the ground tremble. I sighed, I let the power of my wolf build up inside of me. Within seconds I too was a wolf and I stood my ground in front of her, towering. I let out a small defensive growl and she immediately backed off, startled.
I opened my mind, baring my thoughts to her so she could understand that I wasn't going to hurt her. So she could understand that we were so much alike.
Now that she was a wolf, she could come with me...and I could continue my search for my sister.

Yes. Unfortunately I am a bad person. xD I went on far too long without updating and I'm sorry! :3 I've had a very busy summer so far and it is only going to get worse but I'll try my best to keep up with the updates. I hope you like this chapter! After alot of editing and revising, I decided to turn the story in a new direction. Its a little confusing right now, but it will become clearer who Jace is and what his motives are for finding this "person" in the following chapters. xD Thanks for reading!
