I couldn't speak. I stood there, gaping like a fish.
Somewhere deep inside of me, I knew that this was going to happen. I had been so worried about Toryn and Milo, I hadn't even been on my guard for hunters. And with Toryn and Ren's story swirling in my mind, I knew that I was done for. I was a pure werewolf and they wanted me more than any other wolf. They wouldn't stop until they had me.
In the dimly lit parkinglot I could make out four dark forms hovering at the edge of the forest. My ears told me that there were more lurking beyond. As adrenaline coursed through my veins, I quietly dropped my bag to the pavement. I pulled my light blonde hair out of my eyes and growled low and threateningly.
I instinctively called out for Milo and found silence. I cursed myself for forgetting, if only for a instant, that he was long gone. I reached out for Igi instead. Igi- I need help. NOW! I shouted.
We're coming! Just hold on! she replied, her voice trembling.
"Now don't go wolf" one of the hunters warned in a low persuasive voice. "We just want to talk" another shouted. I shook my head defiantly. "You picked the wrong wolf to reason with" I snarled, peering into the darkness, meeting their bright gazes. Most thirsted for my blood, I could feel it in the air.
This was met with a few complaints. Someone cocked a gun. "Oh, to hell with the plan. She won't tell us anything" he hissed. It was a young man, his voice heavy with anger. "Stand down!" the one who had told me they just wanted to talk, demanded. "She killed Danny, I'm only returning the favor!" he exclaimed outraged. With a whistle, and two pops, I looked down to find two bullets imbedded into the concrete at my feet.
"I said stand down!" he shouted again. I felt the red power building up in my chest and I yearned to let my wolf out. There was only one thing these hunters were here for...and it wasn't to talk. They began to whisper to each other so low, that even with my heightened hearing, I couldn't make out what they were saying.
Without warning, the leader came forward, took aim, and before I could even consider ducking, a dart twirled through the air, finally finding my chest. I looked down at the dart, and took hold of its silver shaft. With a curse, I ripped it out and blood began to stain my shirt. I threw the dart to the ground and chuckled darkly. "You think that's all it's going to take to stop me!?" I threw back my head and laughed, but with a wave of vertigo, I found two moons swaying in the sky, instead of one.
I looked at my hand which blurred in and out of focus. "Wh-what the hell did you do to me?" I slurred and held my head, trying to still the world. There were a few satisfied laughs in the distance. "It worked" someone shouted, relieved. I'd been drugged.
I growled and released my wolf, encouraging her to take form. I was met with an eerie, silence. The power I'd formerly known was gone, and I felt cold. My vision and hearing began to decrease until everything was a hum. All of my wolf's senses were gone. I began to wheeze in panic. How was I going to defend myself if I couldn't turn into a wolf?
They began to approach me and I crumpled to my knees. "Dammit" I murmured, gazing at them in a numb daze. I'd been too hesitant, too careful when they'd said they just wanted to talk. It was the first time they had ever suggested anything other than fighting. "Dammit" I whispered again.
Following my dim human instincts, I crawled over to my bag and dug out my pocket knife with shaky fingers. I whirled around when I heard the first scream. Hovering at the edge of the woods were two great wolves, snarling furiously, their fur on end. "Ren" I breathed vacantly. They were here.
I let out a breath of relief and felt warm fingers on my hand, pulling the knife from my grasp. I turned around and met a pair of blue eyes. He smiled, and lifted a hand, gently brushing a few stray strands of blonde hair out of my face. Even with my wolf gone and in a nearly half unconcious state, I felt a fire begin to build in my heart. "Sorry we're late" he murmured. I frowned. I gave a weak chuckle, but it was quickly followed by a frown. I didn't want Toryn to see me like this. Small and defenseless. I was fighter.
When he came in to protect me, I wanted to be right at his side, not in a helpless heap on the ground.
He caught a glimpse of the blood that had spilled down my shirt and growled so furiously that I feared he would go wolf right where he was kneeled next to me. "Toryn it's okay. I'm fine" I reassured him half heartedly.
"You're lying" he replied, instantly taking my hand, pulling me up from the ground and I leaned heavily against him, groaning. "But it doesn't matter" he continued, wrapping an arm around my waist. "We need to get out of here." He glanced at the apartments where a few lights had flickered on at the sound of the struggle outside.
"What about the others?" I asked anxiously, trying to make out there forms in the shadows of the forest. He quickly assessed the woods, seeing what I could not. He smirked. "I think they've got it handled. There aren't as many as before."
I nodded and he swooped my up into his arms. "Let's go" he whispered and he loped into the woods. I clung tightly to him and closed my eyes, dozing off to the lullaby of his heartbeat.
It seemed like only seconds later when I surfaced. He was carrying me up to a room in his home. Some of my senses had returned, but only a little. Enough for me to pick up two thumping hearts on the floor below, including Igi's. She was safe and I was more than relieved. Toryn's expression was stormy, I don't think he'd realized I'd woken up. He gently laid me down on the bed and sat next to me, catching my open eyes. I blinked curiously at him and his expression softened, those hard serious lines fading.
"How are you feeling?" he murmured. "Exhausted" I sighed, but gazed unwaveringly at him. "I'm sorry" he whispered, his eyes serene in the dim lamp light. "Why?" I asked hesitantly.
"Because I broke my promise. You got hurt" he admitted serenely. I took a deep breath and slowly lifted one hand. Carefully, as if I might burn him, I traced the lines on his face with the tips of my fingers. His smooth forehead, and down his straight nose, and across his cheeks. He closed his eyes and I brushed my fingers over his eyelashes, mesmerized. I saved his lips for last, running my fingers across their curves.
He was so beautiful...and he was mine. I wanted to be a part of his pack. I wanted his love. I felt my wolf begin to stir. Something snapped, and suddenly his thoughts were mine, and mine were his.
My hand traveled to the back of his neck, moving upward until I could tangle my fingers in his silky black hair. I gently pulled him down, so that I could press my lips to his. Our mouth's danced slowly and it wasn't long before he pulled away, the fire inside of me flickering out. He was being careful with me and I didn't mind.
I was too tired and drugged to do anything but pull him down next to me and curl into his embrace, letting the night close in.
Sleep, he told me.
