The pier begins to slowly illuminate
with the soft lights of restaurants
and stores,
as the people continue
to walk on the salty wood
of the boardwalk,
and day fades into night.
People laugh,
at the little things,
or the oddities
walking along at dusk.
People talk
softly and loudly,
about their day,
or the cute gentlemen
at 12 o’clock,
straight ahead,
or maybe catching a movie
later.
People lock lips,
in a moment of losing light
and themselves in a simple
affectionate gesture.
people purse their lips,
in frustration their ride
hasn’t arrived yet,
or they feel as if
they’ve been stood up.
People stare,
they glare.
People drink,
and they say things
they could never say
sober.
No filter.
Pure honesty.
Maybe people like that.
But as the sun goes down
on a summer day on the beach,
life doesn’t stop for anyone.
People keep moving,
keep talking,
keep drinking,
keep laughing,
as day fades into night.
