It was about three am in the morning. I was in a state of absolute peace that was until my phone kept constantly vibrating.
"UGH! WHO COULD THAT BE?! THEY'RE GOING TO WAKE UP DARCY!" Oh my gosh. Darcy! I told my brother Niko to watch her and I totally forgot to pick her up! I grabbed my phone and my car keys from the metal hook and I ran out of my apartment. I reached the elevator and clicked the down button. It felt like minutes were passing and the door hasn't opened. I repeatedly pushed on the down button. Finally the doors swung open only to reveal a very angry Niko.
"Oh my gosh Niko! I am so sorry! I completely forgot! I didn't mean to leave her with you. Just something came up." I hastily tried explaining myself, but I could see the anger growing in his face.
"WHAT WAS THIS SOMETHING THAT WAS SO IMPORTANT YOU FORGOT ABOUT YOUR ONLY CHILD?!"
"Niko, please be quiet. Darcy's going to wake up." I pleaded, but he wasn't hearing it.
"DOES IT LOOK LIKE I CARE?! YOU CAN'T JUST LEAVE YOUR KID LIKE THAT! YOU SAID YOU WERE PICKING HER UP RIGHT AFTER WORK. I CAN'T--" Before Niko could finish his angry tangent, a cry escaped Darcy's mouth.
"Look what you did!" I grabbed Darcy out of Niko's hands and started to rock her. "Go back to sleep baby, it's okay. Uncle Niko's just angry. Shh. Shh. Goodnight baby."
"HOW--"
"Niko! Be quiet! Besides, this will never happen again. This is the first time I've ever done this!" I angrily whispered.
"That doesn't excuse it! What was so distracting you forgot your own child!" He brought his voice down to an angry whisper and stared at me with those coal black eyes.
I let out a sigh. "Harry's coming back to Holmes Chapel. I heard him say it on the radio and I just got so frazzled. You know I would never leave Darcy behind intentionally." My voice was pleading and I could see his anger dissipating.
"It's been two years Lila. Harry's changed. You can't keep remembering him and being distracted by him. I know it's hard because he's everywhere. I mean everywhere even in your own child, but he left and never came back. It's time to move on Lila."
His words stung, but he was right. Harry left me for two years and never came back, even when he promised he would.
"I wish it was that easy Niko.."
"I know it's hard Lila, but you can't keep letting it eat at you. It's not your fault he left. He's a dick."
"Hey. Watch it. Baby around. I don't want her hearing this." I sternly glared at my brother and he let out a small chuckle.
"I'm not doing this to hurt you. It's better if I tell you then trying to comfort you. I've comforted you through those first six months, now it's time you start moving on by yourself. I know it's tough, but try at least, for me?" I could hear the slight pleading in his voice.
"I'll try."
"Good. Goodnight Lila. Goodnight Darcy." He planted a small kiss on her forehead and he flashed me a warm smile.
"Goodnight Niko." I returned his warm smile and I entered back into my apartment. Darcy was fast asleep in my arms. A bit of dribble was coming from her mouth. I wiped it with her favorite blue towel. She loves this towel. I have no clue why. Dribble, food, and all. She loves it. I set her down on her carrier as I made myself some tea.
Vanilla chai with two sugars and a table spoon of milk. How I've always liked it. I stir my spoon, turning the coffee from a pitch black to a light caramely brown. I loved that. The gradual switch from light to dark with those small patches just a bit ahead of the others and some slower then the others. It was delicate.
I set my piping hot tea next to Darcy's carrier and I just admired my little baby. Our baby, I suppose you could say, but she was mine at heart. I smiled slightly at her adorable toothy grin she always makes when she's having a good dream. I wonder what she dreams about. Her eyelashes always flutter slightly just like Harry's used to. Her small and quiet snores were just like Harry's. She always is looking for her favorite blue towel. Whenever she can't find it, she thrashes her arms around and her eyebrows furrow out of frustration just like Harry when he would search for me in the mornings.
Stop thinking about Harry. He's in the past. It's time to move on.
I gently grabbed Darcy from her carrier and I placed her gently down in her crib. I planted a small kiss on her forehead and I crawled back into the bed, only to be taunted by dreams of Harry, Darcy, and I as one happy family.
