you could cut the tension with a knife between subin and jaebum.
while subin had said she would consider forgiving jaebum, she still wasn't certain that she was ready to do that. if he was hiding a crazy ex girlfriend, what else was he hiding? was there more to the story that he wasn't telling? were all of his exes like that.
seeing areum also reminded subin that jaebum had a whole life outside of rehab. he had friends, parents that loved him, and he even had a love life, no matter how problematic it was.
it reminded subin that everything between her and jaebum was temporary. even if jaebum were to stay in rehab for a year, he'd leave eventually. the doctors and specialists could work with jaebum so he could deal with all of his triggers; they couldn't make subin feel things.
subin was zoned out, sitting on the examination chair as her doctor poked and prodded. he had her right arm in his hands, pressing his thumbs into the skin to try to get a reaction. he pressed on a pressure point on her inner elbow, she she turned to look at him.
"did you feel that?" he asked.
subin blinked, "i mean, i think i did. i definitely felt something. was it supposed to hurt?"
"yes," the doctor nodded, almost excitedly. he pulled out his clipboard and jotted something down. "even if you think that you felt something, it's an improvement to not feeling anything for sure."
after a few more tests and pressure points, which subin couldn't feel so the arm thing was probably a fluke, the doctor let her go. as she was leaving the room, she was met face-to-face with the one person she didn't want to see.
"subin," jaebum breathed. they hadn't spoken one on one since the night areum paid a visit and jaebum felt as if he was talking to his high school crush for the first time.
subin gave a tight smile as she tried to walk around him but jaebum caught her arm. "what, jaebum?"
his heart was in his throat. "i just, i'm. i uh, i was wondering how it went? you know with the doctor. you're still alive and nothing is broken, so you stopped him before he injured you, right?"
subin stared at the unbelievable boy in front of her. she was supposed to be pissed at him, but he was so cute when he was stuttering and at a loss for words. even though he knew how she felt about him, he still showed genuine interest in her, and holy shit was it hard to stay mad at him when he acted like this.
"i felt a pressure point."
jaebum's eyes went wide. "subin, that's great! did it hurt?"
"it just felt like some pressure." the two stood awkwardly for a beat before subin spoke up again. "i've got to talk to mark. the doctor wanted me to discuss something with him. good luck in there."
the last sentence came naturally to her and it left her mouth before she registered that she was doing it. jaebum didn't care if it was a mistake or not because he seemed floored at the statement.
during jaebum's examination, he ended up asking more questions about subin that answering the doctor's personal questions.
"has subin made any improvements?" he asked while the doctor scrawled something on a piece of paper.
the doctor peeked over the top of his glasses, "you know i can't tell you. patient confidentiality."
"i'm not asking for a background on her. i don't care about her blood type or if she's had any std's. i just want to know if she'd doing any better," jaebum almost spat.
"well," the doctor sighed, putting down his clipboard, "she has made headways over the past month and a half."
jaebum totally did not feel a sense of pride and joy for her.
"what's the next step for her?"
the doctor scratched his temple, "i was thinking something out in the real world? nothing farfetched like rollerskating or something, but maybe a day in the city. she'll need someone to go with her, though."
"i volunteer," jaebum said a little too quickly.
the doctor looked at him and jaebum could almost see the gears turning in his head.
"i was actually thinking about mark, since he's made some serious headway recently too. but seeing as she started getting better once you arrived," the doctor trailed off and butterflies erupted in jaebum's stomach. "i'll consider it."
it wasn't a no, and it wasn't a yes either, but he'd take it.
