"As per usual, the senior advanced biology class is going on an annual end-of-year field trip," Mr. Phyllis explained, sounding bored and annoyed.
There were whispers of excitement throughout the classroom, and Lucy was the first to raise her hand. "Where are we going?" she jested, obviously unable to contain her curiosity.
"Well, we are heading up to the Catskills- a set of mountains up about 150 miles north of New York City. We are going up to observe animal life and experience nature and all that good stuff. We are going to be leaving a week from today, and we will be camping up there overnight, and leaving after lunch the next day. So we are going a Monday to Tuesday, and yes, you will miss school. " Mr. Phyllis finished, pretending to be excited. Apparently it got exhausting, because he gave up and rolled his eyes, slumping his shoulders.
I looked over at Lucy, who was returning my gaze and grinning wildly. This was going to be a fun trip. Lucy's hand piped up again. "So what activities and stuff are we doing?" she asked.
Mr. Phyllis groaned, glaring at her in annoyance. "There will be fishing, kayaking, hiking, canoeing, and swimming. I think there's a rope swing on one of the nearby lakes. There's a checklist of things you have to get done while you're up there, but otherwise, you guys basically get to take care of yourselves." he finished.
It sounded too good to be true. I stole a glance at Peter, who was whispering in excitement to Ned. He then looked at me, his brown eyes wide and smiling.
"Are you going?" he mouthed.
I nodded with a smile, and mouthed back, "Are you?"
He nodded slowly, grinning from ear to ear. His mouth opened slightly, revealing the bottoms of many of his perfect teeth. In response, I tried in vain to keep myself from smiling like an idiot. Excitement started to bubble up inside of me, along with anticipation. I was going on a field trip with my favorite people.
"I will now pass out the permission slips, which I need by Wednesday. If I don't have it by the end of the school day on Wednesday, you aren't going. No exceptions. Understood?" Mr. Phyllis eyed the whole class, as if daring any of them to contradict him.
When everyone nodded in agreement, Mr. Phyllis stood up begrudgingly, and began passing out the papers to the class.
Shortly after our biology teacher returned to his seat, the release bell rang. I gathered up my things, and as soon as I stood up, Peter was next to me, grinning. I think I started to blush— my mind was temporarily scrambled, so I don't quite remember exactly what happened.
"I am so excited for this trip, it's going to be such a blast!" Peter gushed. He and I started to walk out, and I heard Lucy and Ned talking a few people behind us. I couldn't quite make out what they were saying, but I imagined it was something about me and Peter.
"Me too! Hopefully I see one of my parents before Wednesday, so I can get a signature. If not, I'll just get Lucy's mom to sign it or something," I laughed.
Peter looked at me, his mouth forming into a small frown. "Do you not see your parents a lot?" he ventured, his voice small.
"No, I don't. Dad owns a business, so he's gone all day. Mom works for dad, she's basically his personal assistant. So she goes with him most places, but she is home more than Dad is. It's okay though, I've gotten used to it," I assured him.
Peter didn't look convinced. "I'm so sorry, Kenzie. I had no idea."
I quickly waved him off. Although I hated having Mom and Dad gone all the time, I definitely didn't want Peter worrying about it. "It's okay. Really." I finalized.
