It was 5:00, which meant that I had a grand total of half an hour to be ready to go to a fancy dinner with the most perfect girl on the planet.
After our little excursion to the dry cleaners, Kenzie went home to get ready, Lucy joining her. According to Lucy, she had 'best friend duties to attend to', so with that, they were off.
That left Ned and I to struggle figuring out how to tie a tie. He ended up giving up in frustration and leaving with nothing but a 'good luck, have fun'.
I was physically ready at a quarter past five, but mentally, I was still preparing myself.
I combed through my hair a few times, the small amount of hair gel already in it making it easy to shape. After I was content, and after May had fawned over me a little bit, we both made our way out to the car to pick up Kenzie.
"How do you feel, Peter?" May asked me as we pulled up to Kenzie's house. My heart was racing out of control. I sort of felt like I was going to throw up, but I was too excited to care. I couldn't really wrap my head around the concept that Kenzie had agreed to go on a date with me not once, but twice. I knew I was going to screw up somehow, so all I could do was hope that she would still like me afterwards.
May stretched out of her seat and gave me a hug and a kiss on the forehead, and I felt my nerves calm. She always knew what to do. My aunt smiled warmly at me, now settled back into her seat. "Go, get 'em, tiger!" she winked at me, shoving me out of the car.
The air was dry and cool, slapping me in the face as I stepped out of the car. I walked up the sidewalk to Kenzie's front door, my heart pounding wildly.
I knocked a few times on Kenzie's door, but it was Lucy who opened it. She yelled up the stairs to Kenzie, saying, "Hold on, don't come down yet! I have to give this young man the dad talk." I felt my face burn, a stunning contrast to the crisp Queens air.
Lucy stepped out and shut the door behind her, placing her hands on her hips and looking me over. "Listen here, Mr. Parker." I raised my eyebrows in surprise, but she just kept talking. "I've got to be Kenzie's protector, since her father is too big of a jerk to actually care. Kenzie could die and he would only find out if his manager were to tell him about it." Red hot anger filled my stomach, but I didn't interrupt Lucy. "So, I've decided I'm going to fill that role." she paused for a second, looking at the ground.
"Look, Peter. Kenzie is the best person I have met in my life. She is my best friend, and all I want for her is to be happy. You make her happy. Really happy. And I can't thank you enough for that." I glanced up at her in surprise, my insides scrambling like spaghetti on a fork. I make her happy? I thought in astonishment. A small grin crossed Lucy's face. "Be good to her, okay?"
"Yeah, of course." I assured her.
Lucy's familiar smirk came over her face once more. "Alright then." She opened the front door, and yelled, "Kenz? You can come down now!" She then patted me on the shoulder and skipped off to her car, driving away as I stepped inside.
I looked around Kenzie's beautiful home for a few seconds while I was standing by the door. I heard a door close, and I lifted my eyes up to the banister, and my heart stopped.
Walking across the banister and down the stairs towards me was Kenzie. She was dressed in a stunning but simple red dress, matching the color of my corsage. It was more fitting on the upper half, with lace outlining the fabric and reaching down to about the middle of her arms. The bottom half of the dress was layered and silky, defining her every movement as she walked. Her mid-length brown hair was done in loose curls, framing her beautiful face and giving a stark contrast to the red of her dress. Kenzie looked at me, her eyes sparkling. She was wearing makeup, but it wasn't overdone or extremely noticeable- in fact, it looked very natural.
