CHAPTER 13
As Harry slides back into the car, I can't seem to meet his eyes. I look out the window, feeling awkward and embarrassed about what we just did. I notice with a wry grin that it has stopped raining all together.
I am still soaking from the rain though- the flowy blouse I put on this morning is no longer flowing, but sticking to my torso from the wetness. I hear Harry clear his throat from his position beside me, so I reluctantly turn my head to meet his gaze.
"Leah..."
"I can't believe I did that," I interrupt him. "I don't know what came over me. I never would have kissed you in a million years if I-"
His booming laugh stops my nervous rambling. "You do wonders for my ego," he chuckles.
His joking tone makes me look up at him in surprise. I was expecting yelling, anger, or at the very least a "Let's forget this ever happened". But no, Harry is still sitting in my car, cracking jokes as if we didn't just make out for a solid fifteen minutes.
"I didn't mean it like that," I say when he finally stops laughing. "I just...I...I know how you feel about office hook-ups, and relationships, and things like that," I trail off miserably.
He stays silent and I can tell he's musing over what I just said. Great, I made our conversation all depressing. To lighten the mood, I start rambling nervously. "I'm sorry. I'm really awkward around guys. After Ryan cheated on me I just feel like everything I do is wrong."
"First, you're not awkward. And second...who's Ryan?"
"My ex-fiancé," I remind him, and his face dawns in recognition. After a slightly awkward pause, I start talking again. "I know I'm still really young, but after the whole Ryan thing I feel like I'm never going to find a good guy to marry."
Harry shifts in his seat when I bring up marriage, but replies nonetheless. "Don't say that...you have a lot going for you, Leah. I'm certain that you won't be one of those old cat ladies."
I laugh at his comment but it gradually turns back into a frown. "I'm not so sure. I'm too sassy, too mean...too inhibited."
Harry shakes his head. "Being inhibited isn't always a bad thing."
"It is when you make out with your boss," I point out.
He surprised me by placing his hand underneath my chin and pulling it up so I'm staring right into his beautiful eyes. "If you recall, I didn't pull away," he murmurs.
"I would have died if you had," I admit.
He closes his eyes and slowly pulls his hand away from my face. "But I should have."
"I'm supposed to be setting an example for my employees. As it is, I'm having enough trouble convincing the board I'm a suitable choice for chairman. You mentioned my reputation earlier? Yeah, it's not always such a good thing. Next week, it could be all over the office that I kissed you. What do you think will happen then?"
I wipe the rain off my cheeks before answering. "Do you really think everyone would believe something like that?"
He gives me a "duh" look and I sigh. He's right, with his reputation it would easily be believed.
"Especially with what happened last time..." he mutters so low I can barely hear.
My heart sinks. I know that he's talking about Valerie, so I decide it's now or never.
"You mean...Valerie?" I ask innocently.
His head whips around and he stares at me with his green eyes filled with shock. "How do you know about-"
