I stared up at the plain white ceiling in my room waiting for a knock at my door. My suitcase was packed and ready by the door. I laid waiting for what seemed like forever. I was finally going home. I had been here two months. Yesterday, the main doctor at the hospital told me I was free to go home and that I was better. I don't feel any better but I do want to go home.
My eyes shifted from the ceiling to the door as the knock echoed through my ears. I sat up slowly and took one more look around the room before standing up and heading towards the door. I grabbed the doorknob and my suitcase at the same time. I turned the doorknob and opened the door.
"Your parents are here for you, Riley." Dr. Martin said when the door opened revealing his large white smile.
"Thank you." I said to him and started my way toward the lobby. He followed close behind me. He didn't say a word until we got ten feet from the lobby.
"I prescribed you some antidepressents. Your parents were told to pick them up for you at the drug store."
I stopped walking and closed my eyes. I took a deep breath and turned to look at Dr. Martin, "Drugs?" I knit my eyebrows together, "You're putting me on drugs."
"They will help you when your having a low day."
"I don't need drugs. You said I was fine." I told him. Last time I left this place they gave me drugs and in all honesty I think they made me worse.
"You are. Just please cooperate and take the medicine. You don't want to be brought back here again do you?" Dr. Martin asked. I shook my head and then proceeded to the lobby.
I turned the corner and saw both my parents waiting by the front desk for me. My mom smiled when she saw me and pulled me into a hug. She let me go and kissed my forehead.
"We missed you." She said.
"I missed you too."
They checked me out of the hospital and we headed home.
Right when I walked in the door I was engulfed by two arms, "Don't ever ever ever ever ever leave me again!" Toby said squeezing me.
"I won't. I promise." I told him while returning his hug. "Where's Connor?"
"Not home."
"Where'd he go?" I asked curious.
"I don't know. He hasn't been the same since you left. He really isn't home often."
I gave Toby a weird look and he shrugged his shoulders.
"I'm gonna take my stuff up to my room and then we'll go out on the longboards k?" He agreed and then proceeded to the kitchen while I went the other way to my room.
I opened the door and everything was exactly how I left it. My laptop was still open on my desk but the battery was dead, obviously. Everything was the same except for a picture frame that used to sit perfectly straight on my dresser. I walked over and picked it up examining it. It was a picture I always had of Connor and I when we were little. We were at Disney wearing the Mickey Mouse hats. A sticky note was placed over my face that read 'I miss you.'. My heart sunk to the pit of my stomach. I sat the picture back down and ran down the stairs.
"I'll be back!" I yelled before running out the door. I could hear Toby's voice muffled and echoing behind me but I ignored it. I ran as fast as I could until I ended up at the park down the street where Connor and I used to play. As I got closer I could hear the chains squeaking on the swingset. I stopped and took a deep breath.
"Connor?" I said softly walking up behind my brother. His legs were swinging below him, his toes barely touching the ground. He looked as if he was watching his shadow below him. "Connor..."
He lifted his head slowly and I walked around so he could see me. His eyes were red and he had dark circles under them. I took a seat on the swing next to him and we just sat in silence.
"Ri, I need you to tell me you're okay." He said looking straight ahead and not at me.
"I'm okay." I said and this time he looked at me. The hurt in his eyes grew when he saw what I looked like. I was still pale and skinnier than usual. I probably looked worse than I did the last time him and Toby came to see me.
"Promise me. You have to promise because I can't have them send you back to that hell hole and have Toby blame me for everything. I can't sit at home every night without you in your room across the hall. I can't do it. I feel empty, like a part of me is missing." Connor choked.
"I promise." I said and we looked at eachother. "I promise."
He let out a small smile, "I'm glad you're home, Ri."
We sat for a few minutes and then decided to head home. Connor walked beside me with his hands in his pockets. Our walk was silent for a few feet until Connor decided to speak up.
"Andy stopped by yesterday..."
"Oh..."
"She was asking when you were coming home and if you were coming back to school."
"What'd you tell her?" I asked kicking a stone with my foot as I walked.
"I told her I didn't know because I really didn't. I didn't even know you were coming home today. I haven't really talked to Mom or Dad."
"I know. Toby told me."
"You should text her or something." Connor suggested as we came up on our porch.
"I think I will." I said as we walked inside the house.
I walked up to my room and immediately landed on my bed. I missed my bed so much, my own bed. I pulled out my phone and went to create a new message.
Meet me at the schools football feild tomorrow morning at ten. I sent to Andy. After a few seconds she replied, I'll be there.
