Chapter 14: I Was Okay

I woke up to my alarm clock the next morning at 9AM. I forced myself up and I slipped on a pair of basketball shorts and a hoodie. I ran downstairs and grabbed a cereal bar before I walked out the door. I stopped on the front porch and thought about driving to the school but I decided to just walk. The walk wasn't too long and it helped me think of what I would say to Andy.

When I arrived at the football field it was only 9:45 so I decided to take a short jog around the track. I was nervous to talk to Andy and I knew running would calm me down. I started jogging slowly and then eventually picked up my pace by the second lap. I could hear my steady breathing echo through my ears and my feet pounding on the track. After a few laps I noticed someone in the bleachers. I stopped to look and saw Andy sitting patiently. I waved to her and she smiled waving back.

"Having fun?" She yelled to me.

I didn't reply. I ran over to the bleachers and sat next to her. We sat quiet at first just enjoying the morning breeze and eachothers presence.

"How have you been?" Andy finally asked.

"Fine."

"Are you really fine this time?"

"I hope so." I said softly.

We were silent again. I glanced over at Andy and she was looking down at her lap twiddling her thumbs.

"Andy, I don't think we can do this."

"Do what?"

"Be together." I said with a shaky voice.

"I broke up with him....."

"I know but that doesn't matter. I can't be with you. I can't even be around you more than two seconds without feeling like I'm going completely insane. I was fine until I met you. I don't know what it is but something about you makes me crazy and I can't put my finger on it. I think it'd be safe if we just distanced ourselves from eachother for a while."

"Riley, I....I just wanted to help you."

"I know but you're making me worse every second." I said to her and I grabbed her hand, "I started to fall for you Andy, I want you to know that but I just can't be around you. I'm sorry."

I let go of her hand and made my way back down the bleachers. I didn't look back at her once as I left the football field. I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders and for the first time I felt a spark in my chest. A warm feeling and a smile started to paint across my face as I walked home. I was okay.
