Kate stared at the blank piece of paper she had been given, then at the paint. She looked around to see all the other children had started their pictures.
"Draw something that you love." The teacher had said. The boy on her left was painting a cat and the girl on her right was painting a doll. She thought hard, then decided to draw her siblings."Remember children the head teacher, Mr Kane, is going to be judging these to pick his favourite so paint your absolute best!" The teacher said, walking around the classroom. Kate set to work on her picture. After half an hour of painting the teacher told them to finish off and put their work on the drying rack. Kate very proudly looked down on her masterpiece. She hurried forward and placed it on the top shelf of the drying rack, beaming with pride. Their teacher read the children the story of Pinocchio and just as they finished Mr Kane walked in. He too was beaming in pride at all of the children sat up in their neat rows, listening intently to their teacher. He introduced himself to the children and gathered together the pile of paintings from the rack.
His eyes widened slightly looking at the first painting. He turned it around and read the child's name, Kate Pulido. He continued to look at all the rest of them, while the children sat staring in suspense. After what felt to them like hours, he took a deep breath and began announcing the winners.
"Third place, this lovely painting of a doll by Stacey Whitely."
The girl stood up and collected her prize, a small packet of sweets.
"Second place, this amazing painting of a cat by Charlie Oscar."
He too stood up and collected a packet of sweets.
"And first place, with this beautiful picture of a family," His eyes glazed over for half a moment, but he quickly recovered. "Is Kate Pulido!"
Kate gasped and shot up like a bullet. Mr Kane smirked. She made her way through the sea of children and up to the smiling head teacher.
"For your prize Kate, we're going to go to the dinner staff and get you a bun!" Mr Kane said, a little too excitedly. Kate grinned and stood up, ready to go.
"She will miss no longer than ten minutes of this lesson Ms Maystone." Mr Kane explained, then took Kate's hand and lead her out of the classroom.
