The Underworld was filled with chaos when I exited the portal and continued to make a run for it. There were fights happening everywhere and I could hear the snarls of the Bones and the grunts of the Skulls. Whatever was happening, I didn't want to stick around to watch. I had to see if my mother was alright. I heard the sound of others exiting the portal and I sped up. They should be distracted with the war going on to not bother paying attention to me. But I highly doubted that. I was the queen after all and they would probably follow me to make sure I was safe.
The idea that the Bones were in charge of all of this was making more and more sense to me. It couldn't be a coincidence that a Manick rose and the Bones attacked. But how did they leave the Underworld? Everything just didn't make sense. Nothing could control the Bones but yet they were all working together. Maybe Rick and Marc were wrong.
Or they were hiding something once again.
I had to find out more about Cornelius also since he was able to use the Bones to get what he wanted; whatever that was. For all I knew he escaped his prison and was running around causing mayhem. Rick did say that he didn't know if the prison was escape proof and the only way to find out was to test it out yourself.
But he could have lied about that also.
I just couldn't trust them. The only person that I knew was telling the complete truth was myself.
I shook all of those thoughts away and focused on getting to my mother. I was closer to the house but I still had distance to cover. No one looked my away, not even the Bones. They didn't seem to care about me or maybe they wanted me to get to my destination. I didn't know and I didn't care.
I looked behind me and saw Zain and a few others I didn't recognize following me. Zain was still clutching his arm and his eyes were unfocused. He needed medical help instead of following me. I was fine, he wasn't. I knew I didn't hate Zain because of what happened earlier. He might have lied to me and ruined the trust but I still love and care about him. He's my only friend.
I pushed open the large double doors and continued to run. I knew exactly where my mother's room was. The interior of the house was suspiciously empty which increased my anxiety. Someone should have at least been here to keep watch over my mother. I turned the corner and almost stopped dead in my tracks.
Standing in front of her open door were two bodies with arrows through their hearts. They were definitely Skulls and definitely dead. I didn't want to think the worst but it was hard not to. I slowed my run to a walk and took a deep breath before standing in the doorway.
My mother's room was different. It was obvious that someone was here and they made a large display that they were. The wallpaper was torn in random places and any furniture that was there was completely destroyed. On the wall next to the bed were the initials S.S. We'll be waiting written in red.
And on the bed was absolutely nothing. My mother was gone.
I don't know how long I stood there staring at the empty bed. This had to be an ongoing nightmare. My mother just couldn't be gone once again. I already lost her and just when I thought that I could save her she was taken once again. I didn't feel like crying. I was filled with an anger unlike anything I ever felt before. My body was shaking from holding it in. This time I wouldn't cry in a corner feeling hopeless. I was going to get her back.
S.S wouldn't be waiting long.
Cries erupted from outside of my mother's room and I slowly walked toward the source. The group that was supposed to be following me were surrounding the two bodies I passed. I didn't take the time to look at them when I passed them but now I did. It was a male and female with similar dark hair but the female's was a shade lighter. I could clearly see the same features I see in the two brothers when I look at the couple. I knew who they were without being told and for a moment I forgot about my own problems when I saw Rick and Marc round the corner.
