We eventually returned downstairs, not before Otabek told me my jumper was inside out and to go clean my face. In the mirror, I could see how flustered I looked, but it only made me beam wider. Damn, something must be wrong with me! I had certainly gone from being incredibly moody to dancing on cloud nine. Not that I was complaining, of course - I was sixteen, more than aware of my dramatic mood swings. I was still a little irritated that I hadn't been told about this but then, it had been a surprise and being with Otabek might not have been so fun beforehand had I been aware of where we would go after.
Everyone turned to look at me and, despite being confident usually, I felt a little overwhelmed by everyone's enthusiasm. Otabek placed a secure hand on my shoulder to reassure me and I felt a lot better. As he had said, I needed to take it slowly and not rush into anything. Just as we had done.
"Ah Yurio! You're back!" Viktor didn't appear the slightest bit affected by how I had reacted earlier and I was grateful as it didn't make me feel as guilty as it perhaps should have done, "There's a present we have for you that you need to open straight away... I should have made you open it as soon as you got in really, but never mind. I'm sure it's fine!" I raised an eyebrow quizzically. Why on earth would one present need to be opened so soon? I studied Otabek for a hint of some kind but got nothing. Damn Otabek to hide his emotions at a time like this!
"Yuri, darling! Bring it in, please!" Viktor called out. Yuri Katsuki came in and everyone "ooh"-ed collectively like it was something to be highly intrigued about. If anything, the wrapping was awful; little holes had been punctured everywhere. Had this been yet another victim of Viktor's "creativity", with the same enthusiasm in which that bloody cake had been created with?
"I got this, this morning," The Japanese Yuri explained, putting it on the floor and adjusting his glasses, "It's not new but... we think you'll like it." Not new? Well, I wasn't so fussed, I told myself. I picked it up to shake it, when about half the people in the room yelled, "NO YURIO DON'T SHAKE THE PRESENT!" Frowning, I put it back down and began to unwrap it. No way...
It was a pet carrier. A small one at that. One that, having lived with a pet since I was seven, I could immediately tell was for a cat. Without even hesitating, I opened it up immediately and pulled her out - "Potya!" I yelled, a little louder than I intended and my cat miaows, recognising who I am. I hold her close and she purrs loudly, and I remember just how much I missed her being close by, "Your grandpa sends his love too." Yuri tells me, smiling at my reaction.
Everyone is talking, and pointing, and taking photos. The mood is contagiously good and I have my cat in my arms. Otabek leans down and puts his arm around my shoulders, pecking my cheek, "Happy Birthday, Yuri."
The End.
