Chapter 5: The Mermaid 🌊✨

*The scene changes back to Spencer, Aria, and Emily in Alison's bedroom reading through some of her old journals while Hanna and Alison are still talking downstairs*

Spencer - There's like 3 journals on this bookshelf, I guess we can take turns reading each one for any valuable information.

Spencer looks over to see Emily deep within the journal as if she's already found something worth reading.

Spencer - So, is it a Page-Turner?

Aria - Yeah Em, How bad is it?

Emily - It's weird.
There's one story where she says I'm so desperately in love with her I'd rob a bank for her if she asked me to, and then another where she says I always put my friends first and she wishes she was more like me...
I still haven't really found anything about Paige yet though.

Spencer - Wow, how far have you gotten?

Emily - Far enough to need a break.

Aria - Did you guys know that Ali writes poetry? I don't know what she's talking about but it rhymes okay.

Spencer - I'm still confused, I don't recognize any of these names..

Emily - Because she changed them...

Spencer - She was changing stories, too. You just have to know the real stories in order to recognize the fake ones.

Emily - Sounds like Ali, the truth bores her.

Spencer - So it's like creative non-fiction with pseudonyms?

Emily - I don't know what that means.. but, sure.

Aria - Wait...Do you guys know who Mermaid is? Or Girl crush? 

Emily's POV
I felt my heart flutter a bit because I  knew that mermaid was Alison's nickname for me. I then felt slightly uneasy because I couldn't possibly imagine what she wrote about me.. or us in that journal. There's probably all types of embarrassing secrets about things I've told Ali in there.
Emily quickly gets up and snatches the journal from Aria...

Emily - Ohh uh-mm! You don't wanna read that one. It's ya know... cringey.

Aria - We knew that Ali had journals. But What's so bad about this one?

Emily - Because the stories in here, they're... they're personal.

Spencer - Personal about Ali?

Emily - About Ali... & Us.
There are things in there that we may not know about each other, and things from the past that we want to forget.

Spencer - So you thought you should get to read it, and we don't?

Emily - its not that! I just didn't see the point of bringing all that up again.

I look down and turned the pages quickly trying to find anything similar to the names  that Aria had mentioned earlier "Girl Crush" & "Mermaid." Not knowing what to expect or what to find, I finally reach a page titled "The MERMAID". My heart rate speeds up a little and I can feel the corners of my mouth lift slightly as I begin to read what she wrote about me..

"Look at my mermaid. If she knew how much power she had. She could have whoever she wants. But she's afraid. I think about what she'd be like if she was as tough as she was beautiful.

You can be anything you want to be in this world, but one thing you can't ever be is weak."

Im not too sure how to feel about this one honestly.. what does she mean by I could have anyone I want? She knows I've always adored her, more than a friend. Even though I've never said it out loud, she uses it against me sometimes. I see the next title Aria mentioned called Girl Crush. I was hoping that it would be about me, but as I began to read, Id wished I never read it..

"So Girl Crush kissed me today. To be fair, I kissed her back and it was good. But I definitely don't have feelings for her in the way she has had them for me since she was 15...
How no one has noticed this besides me is mind blowing. I may be more attentive to these sort of things than most people, but GC is so obvious about it that her eyes might as well be permanently glued to me. Funny thing is, if I hadn't let her kiss me, she may have never admitted, even to herself, what she really is. I better make sure she doesn't think what--

ACHOO!!
*aria sneezes on the back of Emily's head*

Emily's story time is cut short once she realizes that Spencer and Aria have been reading behind her the entire time. She was so indulged in the words that she didn't realize they were spying less than inches away.
She slams the journal shut and puts it back on the bookshelf.

Aria - Oh my gosh.. I'm so sorry Emily.
Were those stories she wrote..about you?

The wheels begin to turn in Spencer's head and it finally clicks.

Spencer - Oh, mon Dieu..You're Mermaid.

Aria - Wait, You and Alison kissed? Why does nobody tell me anything.

Emily - I umm I'm not sure which question to answer first..You guys cannot say anything! To anybody, or she'll kill us.

Spencer - Scouts honor.

Aria - My lips are sealed.

Hanna - HANNA MARIN BACK IN THE HOU--- woah.. what were you guys doing? Ali is coming up the stairs! I'll stall her before she sees all her journals everywhere.

Hanna shuts the door and distracts Ali for a few seconds so the girls can put the journals back in their places.
Unfortunately for Emily shed forgotten to do one major thing when she put back Alison's Diary on the shelf.
Alison senses something is amiss when she waltz's back into the room and she will figure it out before daylight.

Alison - Hope you guys didn't have too much fun without me. So, What'd I miss?

A/N wohooooo this chapter was a little long but totally worth the build up! I wonder what Emily forgot to do ? And I wonder what Alison confessed to Hanna? hmmmm. Suspense.
