I turned up the heat a little more then returned to tapping my fingers on the wheel to the beat as I drove home from work, then I saw it.
There was a person standing on the bank of the semi frozen river right before you drove into town just staring. The river was still rushing fast despite the large pieces of ice it was carrying.
I honestly wasn't going to stop, I honestly was just going to mind my own business. Dumb middle school kids jump in that thing all the time to see who can stay in the cold the longest. What made me stop was the fact that it was a girl and she looked way bigger than middle school as she kept staring into the river. I shook my head, it was none of my business was this girl does. But something kept nagging at me as she got smaller in my rearview mirror. I sighed, hitting the breaks, busting a U-turn and going back.
I parked on the side and quietly walked behind her, not wanting to scare her in case she was going to jump.
"Hey."
She didn't move.
"What are you doing out here? You know its almost midnight."
Nothing, no response, but she shifted her weight from her left foot to her right which was slightly poised to jump. Then it hit me, she was going to jump jump and not plan on coming back out.
I took more steps forward so I could grab her if she did go over. "So," I said, continuing to inch forward, "do you have a name?"
I still couldn't see her face, it was so dark and she was still facing away. She inched forward, kicking up a few rocks that tumbled down into the river and I reached for her. Latching my right arm across her stomach and the left around her chest pulling her back.
She jerked, spinning around to look at me, snapped out of the trance she was in.
"Hey." I gave her a small smile but she just started at me, frowning like I had just crushed her plans. I mean technically I had but...
I kinda just saved her life and she kept looking at me like I was the one who shot Uncle Ben.
