"Oh wow, one of you guys actually realizes where your intelligence level is?! Thanks for the advice, but I think I'll just go back to being invisible and doing what I want."
Stupid jock, I had that under control. They would've hit me a few times, called me some names, then gone on their way. I'd need to explain what happened and why I might be bruised up a bit to the academics team and Warren, but I'd be invisible again. Now because of this self proclaimed hero, they're gonna find me behind the school or something and beat the shit out of me. Wonderful. Thanks, Superman.
I quickly got changed so I could get out of there before the smell of Axe Deodorant suffocated me, running into the gym where most people were already warming up or talking to friends. Henry was attempting to do push-ups, failing harder than I thought possible.
"Why do you try? Warm ups aren't graded." I said to him, sitting down next to Henry.
The boy looked up and smiled. "Because I don't want to pull anything. I need to at least be a little active, even if I'm not in sports."
"I really doubt that you'll pull something in gym class." I snickered. "Neither of us do anything that would injure us. We're not stupid."
Henry shrugged as he got up. "I guess you've got a point, but it's still not a bad thing to be fit at least a little bit."
Coach Davidson walked into the gym and stood in front of everyone in the room. "Alrighty then! Let's got started everyone. We're playing football."
"Yes!!" Warren cheered from somewhere in the other side of the room.
"American football, not the kicking stuff." The couch quickly said.
"Aw, man..."
Mr Davidson split the class into two teams, with many of the sports players ending up on the same team, and all the weaker guys on the same team. Henry sighed as he looked at our team, which he was assigned as captain of.
"Ok, so let's umm... Lets have Romeo be team captain." He said, walking back into the group.
Superman walked out of our group, looking a little uncertain. "Well, we are at a disadvantage right now. They have a lot of stronger guys in their side, which in most cases is really bad, but I've got some ideas." He said.
We are all gonna die.
"So, I want everyone to just run forwards at once and get past the other team. I'm going to throw the ball out to Henry, Alex, or Greg. I want them to throw the ball to whoever is open ahead of them, and so on so forth." The sporty guy explained. "I don't actually know if this is allowed, but Mr Davidson has never stopped people from experimenting in gym class, so we should be good."
He nodded to the team and we all began walking out to the field. I stood by Henry and just waited for the whistle to be blown. When it went off, Henry shot out like a rocket and I was just a little behind from hesitating before I started running. I passed Henry when he slowed down for a moment and turned behind him a little as he ran (What is he even doing?).
"Julian!" Henry shouted.
I turned just in time for the ball to land in my arms and it took a moment for the realization to hit me. I had the ball. Fuck.
The speed at which I was running after that was not the speed of someone that was sporting (Yes, that's the word I used), it was the speed of a little guy being chased by three big sports players. As you'd expect, it was not nearly fast enough.
"God damn it!!" I screamed as I held onto my ankle after being brought to the ground.
Henry ran over with a concerned look. "Did you twist your ankle?!"
"Well it's about as straight as I am right now, so yeah, I think I did!" I shouted at him.
"Now isn't the time for jokes, we've got to get you to the nurse." He cried.
Superman ran over and crouched down next to me, a calm look on his face. "Let me see that." He said as he gently took my foot and ankle, careful not to injure it anymore. "Alright, let's get you out of here."
Before I could respond, he picked me up as if I was weightless and just began to walk back inside the school with me in his arms.
"Be careful, you don't want him to infect you!" One of the jocks from earlier laughed.
And yet again, this guy shocked me. I was about to say something, but the guy that was carrying me beat me to it. "Shut up guys! First of all, he's injured, and second of all its none of your business who he likes. Quit being jerks already."
And then we just went past them and into the school. As we walked down the halls, it almost looked like Superman was looking at me, his amber eyes seeming preoccupied. I should probably figure out what his name actually is.
"Umm, thanks. You know, for helping me out there." I said. "And, sorry for being rude back in the locker room."
He smiled brightly. "Its all cool. I guess I should say sorry as well."
"For what? You're not just helping me so you can do something horrible, right?" I asked in a joking manor.
The boy smiled. "No, it's nothing like that. I just, well, I don't know you."
Really? That's what he's concerned with? Seems like a stupid thing to care about. "Yeah, I usually like keeping it that way, so no need to apologize. I actually don't know you either."
He froze, stopping in the middle of the empty hall. "You don't know me?" He asked. "You really don't know me?"
"Umm, no. Should I?" I asked.
"No, no there's no reason you should. It's just, everyone seems to know me, and I know practically everyone in the school." He said with a nervous smile. "My name's Romeo."
I don't know what it was, but... I think my heart skipped a beat.
