We stared at one another, not saying anything. The apes that hung from the trees, now hung in silence where as before they screamed for their now fallen comrades.
I have walked these jungles myself for so long, I know them just the same as if they were etched in my head with a sharp knife, scored in deep like some strange work of art. I'm calm here, at home, on the down low with a steady heart beat. Not now though. Now my heart wants out of my chest. It wants to beat free of its cage. It pounds like it's going to crack a rib. My senses are on high alert. Every colour is brighter, every noise louder, every noise a cause to make my heart beat more fiercely still. Then in one fearsome second it exploded in a rush of movement as the ape ran towards me, with a scream on my lips I did the same.
I knew that I couldn't beat him hand to hand, the muscle mass in his arms and shoulders alerted me to that. I think he also knew that I wouldn't hit him dead on, because his approach seems slowed. He was looking for my opening move, maybe they weren't a stupid as I first thought. Finally reaching one another he swung an arm around at my head, which I ducked with ease. Making a swipe at his belly with my blade, he jumped back seeing my attack before I hit him.
He snarled at me before coming in again, hands raised trying to capture mine in their grip. The howl of the apes cheering him on, once more spurred him into action. Forgoing the hand to hand attack, he armed himself a spear from a fallen ape, he ran, this time aiming for my legs. After jumping the spear he attempted to hit me with, I swung my leg up, and with a twist of my body I kicked him in the side of the head.
He stumbled back in surprised, the apes around him fell into a shocked silence. All startled that I had actually landed a hit on him, his face changed in an instant. Letting out another battle cry he took two steps forward and stood at his full height, puffing out his broad chest.
Then I was on my knees, sharp pain behind them causing them to crumple. Whipping my head around I saw that two apes had come up behind me and hit the back of my legs. My face twisted into a snarl, realizing to late that the battle cry was actually a sign to the others to come up behind me.
His face still twisted into a glare, he walked towards me. I attempted to take to my feet, not letting him show that the was scaring me. But the apes that stood at my side pushed my down once more. So I sat there, glaring up at him from my seat on the ground. Once he stood before me, still standing high with a swollen chest. Eyes locking onto one another's,..... "GO!!", I jumped back, the fear flashing in my eyes before covering it with fake bravo. He spoke, he actually spoke. I stay silent, whether it was from fear or stubbornness, I didn't know.
"LEAVE AND DON'T COME BACK!" He screamed at me once more. "NO!" My voice seemed almost squeaky compared to his deep one. He didn't look happy with my answer, wondering if he was going to kill me. "Rain" he said addressing someone else but still not looking away from my eyes, "take her from the forest, to the human settlement". Quickly interrupting him, I said " if you take me from my home I will only return, only this time I will have someone to hunt". The look he gave me was breath taking in the bad way, he stared down at me, almost like he was seeing into my soul.
"Stand her up." He said to the apes that stood at my side. After some fighting I was on my feet, I snarled at the apes beside me, who in return took a step away. I snorted, 'what cowards' I thought to myself, letting my gaze fix if the large primate that stood before me.
After some staring, and the silence had almost become deafening he spoke, not to me. To the apes around me. And what come out of his mouth shocked me to my core.
" take her to the closest out post". He said, even though I was standing I still had to stare up at him. I scrunched my nose at him, "as our prisoner" he clarified.
