"Hey! I don't have the whole night!" The taxi driver's voice woke me up. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and mumbled an apology, fishing out a wad of cash from my pocket and handing it over. "Keep the change," I added before getting out of the taxi and making my way to my doorstep.

As I fumbled with the key, I couldn't help but notice the front door was opened. A knot formed in my stomach. "Hello?" I called out, but silence was my only reply. "This isn't good," I thought to myself, considering calling the cops.

Just then, I heard a shuffling from the bedroom. My heart racing, I tiptoed towards the source of the noise. "Is someone there?" I called out again, this time adding, to my surprise, it was Sonny. "What are you doing here?" I asked, a mixture of confusion and suspicion in my voice. "I live here too," he replied, quickly adding that he was just grabbing some clothes and his wallet.

But something was off. The once confident and carefree Sonny seemed different. He was jittery, and his voice wavered. The air was thick with an awkward silence as I tried to make sense of the situation.
Finally, he spoke up, apologizing for his past behavior and asking for my forgiveness. I wanted to say something, to ask him what was really going on, but it was as if my mouth was frozen shut. I could feel the tension between us, but I stayed silent, not sure how to broach the subject.
Sonny, on the other hand, was becoming increasingly agitated. He dropped a bombshell, insisting that Sofia wasn't my daughter. "I know it doesn't make sense, but I can't ignore what I know," he said before quickly making a hasty exit.
I was left standing there, dumbfounded and unsure of what to make of his words. But one thing was for sure, there was more to this story than met the eye.

The next day, I took a shower and went to collect my daughter, Sofia. "Look, Daddy, it's for you!" she exclaimed, waving a piece of paper in front of me. "What's this?" I asked, intrigued. "It's a drawing, look," she said, beaming with pride. I took the paper from her tiny hands and gazed upon three figures holding hands.

"It's Daddy, me, and Grandma," she said with a smile that lit up the room. "That's so pretty," I said, giving her a warm embrace. As we walked towards the car, she began to talk on about her day yesterday. "And then we played outside, and it was so cool! I even made a new friend and she's so sweet." I listened intently, but my mind started to wander. I realized it had been a while since I had spent quality time with Sofia, and my hectic work schedule and stress had been taking a toll.

"Sofia," I said, grabbing her attention. "Want to go on a trip?" I asked, and her eyes lit up as she nodded. "Trips are fun!" she shouted, hopping up and down. I opened the car door and helped her in. "Where are we going?" she asked eagerly. "It's a secret," I said with a twinkle in my eye. I closed the door and walked around to the driver's side. "When are we going?" she asked again. "Tomorrow," I replied. "I'll call you in sick." She was quiet for a moment.

"But Sofia's not sick," she said, and I chuckled. "I know, but it's a secret. It's a top-secret mission and they said we can't tell anyone or the candy bandits will come and steal our treats!" I whispered, making a left turn.
She put her hands over her mouth in shock. "I don't want the candy bandits to steal my candy, Daddy," she said with pure innocence. "Don't worry, they won't as long as we complete the mission," I explained. "What's the mission?" she asked, looking serious. "To have fun, but don't tell anyone," I whispered back. She nodded her head seriously and shouted, "Are you ready, Sir, for a trip to the unknown?"

"Yes, Sir!" I answered, and I couldn't help but smile. "Daddy," she said in a soft voice. "Yeah?" I replied. "I love you, Daddy," she said, and my heart melted. It was the first time she had told me she loved me, and it brought tears to my eyes. "I love you too, Sofia, very much," I said, and she gave me one of the sweetest smiles I've ever seen. I was truly blessed to have her in my life.
