Max woke up to a knock on the door. He grunted and began to sit up, forgetting the day before. Before he had even moved a few inches his head exploded in pain and he stopped.
He heard a few footsteps, and turned his head slightly to see Ross coming down the steps. His curly hair was messy and he was rubbing one eye, making it clear he had just woken up. He yawned before going to the door and opening it a crack.
"Hello...?" He murmured sleepily. The person on the other side of the door said a few things, and Ross opened the door further to let him in. The first thing Max noticed when he walked was his short curly ginger hair and the fact that he wore a lightning bolt necklace, which looked to be a similar material to the one Max wore around his own neck.
The man nodded thankfully to Ross before taking a seat across from Max. Ross remained by the door, watching the two for a moment, before heading off into his kitchen to make breakfast. The man watched him go before turning back to Max.
"So." He began. "My name is Michael Vacktor. General Kips sent me to check on you," he paused and for a moment his eyes rested on the amulet around Max's neck. He seemed to snap out of his daze and continued. "And to ask about that amulet."
Max narrowed his eyes a little, before he slowly sat up, grunting when his head throbbed a little. "What about it?" He managed to get out and Michael looked him in the eye.
"When did you acquire it? The General said he had never seen it before yesterday after the battle." Max could tell something was going on. General Kips would have questioned me then and there...
"I only wear it at home. It was my fathers." He lied, and Michael narrowed his eyes slightly.
"Then why did you wear it yesterday?" He questioned and Max bit the inside of his cheek, feeling slightly dizzy.
"We left in a hurry. I didn't expect to have to go out yesterday, and I had no time to take it off." Michael suddenly sighed, and Max saw a dangerous glint in his eye that hadn't been there before.
"Do I need to ask your friend?" Ross was staring at the two in confusion, apparently having walked back into the room a moment or two before.
"No. I think you can trust my word over most others. My question is why I've never seen you around. I like to think I know most of my fellow soldiers." Michael looked slightly taken aback for a moment before he sat back in his chair.
"I'm new." Max glanced over at Ross, who seemed to be nearly as suspicious as himself. Ross gave him a small nod before taking a careful steps towards Michael.
"I'm sorry sir, but my friend isn't feeling well. I think you should leave." Ross had barely finished his sentence before the man let out a short laugh.
"You're a terrible liar you know." He stood up, eyes on Max's necklace. "Give me the necklace and no one gets hurt."
Ross stumbled back at little when Michael's eyes suddenly flashed red. Max reached towards his side quickly for his sword. He began to feel increasingly lightheaded due to the sudden movement, and for a moment was confused when he grasped empty air. He looked up to see Michael smiling down on him.
"Are you really going to risk your own safety over a little amulet that doesn't even belong to you?" He asked, making a 'tisk' sound as he stepped closer. Max gritted his teeth, glaring at the man. The sorcerer chuckled a little, and suddenly Max was surrounded in a red aura.
"Put the sword down kid. You don't want anything bad to happen to your best buddy do ya?" Max finally noticed that Ross was slowly creeping up behind Michael.
The shorter brunette lowered the sword staring at Michael with a look of almost pure terror. Michael chuckled again, and Max felt light as air as he was lifted up and thrown into what he presumed was a wall.
