"Cruel and cold like winds on sea; will you ever return to me?"
"Hear my voice, sing with the tide."
" My love will never die..."Jonathan opened his eyes to greet the rising sun over the sea from his window. He rubbed them to look around at his surroundings to see that he was in his bedroom.
I keep having that weird dream, Jonathan thought as he got ready for a day to heave crates and barrels from ships, Maybe if my mother was still here...
He looked over at a picture of his mother and him right on his bed side. He smiled at her smiling face; they had the picture done by a good artist. He felt for a special locket that his mother gave him the night she vanished from sight; the night of a huge storm that brewed from nothing. He frowned as he kept back tears from coming out, but he was strong over the years. He walked outside and walked to the docks.
"Ahoy there Jonathan," he heard his friend Craig call out.
He grinned and watched his friend run up to him with something behind his back. Jonathan raised an eyebrow as he continued forward.
"What's behind your back?," Jonathan asked with a grin.
"Only slips for each one of us to be crew members on the best ship on the seas," Craig sang, pulling out the papers.
Jonathan gasped in excitement and snatched his paper to take a look at it. It was fine print, he was going out to sea to help on board a ship that was famous for the amount of cargo it carried, and the speed it possessed. Jonathan always had this calling for the open waters, like it was always calling to him.
"Jonathan? You ok?"
Jonathan snapped out of his thoughts, turning to Craig with a smile.
"Everything is great. I can't wait to board that beauty of a ship."
"Hey you two! What took you guys so long?!"
Both men turned and saw that they arrived at the docks to see their other three friends waving to them with grins. Craig told them the news, and they danced around in excitement. They waited with with anticipation as they watched the horizon for the ship. Jonathan kept fiddling with his mother's locket, not opening it because it let out a musical chime, and he didn't want attention.
"There she is!," Scotty yelled out, Jonathan startled, but smiled as he saw the ship he was pointing at.
It was sailing closer to them by the minute, and all the guys, Lui, Craig, Scotty, Brock, and Jonathan, stood in a line and waited for the ship to come to a halt. They saw the planks come down, and the captain was coming off the ship. He looked at the men with an emotionless stare, holding out his hand to see their forms.
"I'm guessing you're our new crew members," he said in a monotone voice.
"That's correct captain," Brock chirped.
"Mhm, see that you board yourselves after you haul the shipment on board."
Jonathan and his friends did just that, and raced on board and situated themselves with the help of the captain's first mate.
"Alright," the man said, "My name is Jack, but you refer to me as sir. Captain Mark will be back with the trading route so we can set sail. We are to deliver a hefty amount of money from taxes, between you and me, i'm not going through that because of the boredom. On the ship, hammocks are first come first serve, otherwise you'll sleep on the floor. Since you're new, I'll go easy on you guys for your first trip. Understand?"
"Sir yes sir," they all said.
"Good; here comes the captain now. Get to working by tying down the crates."
Captain Mark was indeed coming aboard the ship, giving Jack a somewhat playful stare, to Jonathan's point of view, before jack went up and joined him at the wheel.
"Let's go!," Mark yelled.
The ship took off, and the friend group came together to watch the waves go by. They pointed out different things such as clouds or fish that come up every so often. Lui did his kid like voice when they saw a pod of dolphins jump bye in the small waves. Soon the sun was setting, and they watched it set; the colors were live and firy.
"Nothing like a good sunset to end the first day," Lui sighed.
"Yeah," Scotty agreed.
"Come on, let's go get our bunks," Craig grinned.
They all swiped a good one, Jonathan scored with one that was bye a window. He continued to watch the sunset with a lazy smile on his face.
"Mr. Denis."
Jonathan let out a cry of surprise, almost falling off the hammock, and turned to see Jack standing there.
"Yes sir?," Jonathan responded.
"I'm afraid you'll have to take the crow's nest for the night watch. Is that alright?"
"Ay sir."
"Good; get to it then."
Jonathan went on deck, climbing skillfully up to the crow's nest to watch the waters.
At least it's a warm night, Jonathan mentally sighed.
He looked up at the stars and remembered an old memory.
*flashback*
"Mommy! Look what I found!," a young six year old Jonathan called out.
A woman with moon kissed skin and curly, messy, dark-brown hair came up to him. She wore a ragged brown dress, and had a silver, old locket around her neck. She knelt down and looked at the pearly white crab in the boy's hands.
"That's a pretty little crab," she said, "But mister crab has to go back where he belongs."
"Yes mother," Jonathan nodded.
He placed the crab back down on the sand, and it scuttled off into the ocean. He and his mother played near the shore as the sun was setting, and they laughed together. The only time his mother panicked was when he got ankle deep in the water.
"Mommy, why am I not allowed to swim in the water?," Jonathan asked his mom as they gazed at the stars.
"You can swim in any watery area," she said, "But the ocean is no place to swim. You must promise me you'll never go into the ocean water passed the top of your foot, ok?"
"Yes mommy."
She kissed the top of his head, and was going to sing his favorite song.
*end of flashback*
"If only I could remember the song you sang to me," Jonathan sighed.
He fiddled with the locket around his neck, and decided to open it. A soft tune played as it showed a little gears of the music box inside playing. He smiled softly at it. The night continued to drone on as he waited for the sun to rise again.
"How are ye doing Mr. Denis?," he heard Jack's voice speak from behind him.
"I'm doing fine sir," Jonathan answered.
Jack clambered into the crow's nest as well. He stood next to Jonathan as they watched the sky start to turn violet.
"Thanks again for taking the night shift," Jack pat Jonathan's back, "Captain Mark needed me in his quarters for a meeting."
Jonathan looked back at him; blush was on the man's cheeks. Jonathan grinned and started to snicker. Jack noticed and punched him playfully.
"Tell and I'll cut yer tongue off!"
"Tell what? I don't know what you're talking about," Jonathan teased.
"Ah forget it."
"Hahahaha!"
They laughed together as the sun started to peek over the horizon. Jack allowed Jonathan to go down from the crow's nest to go get some sleep.
"You're a lucky bastard Jon," Craig told him, "You get to sleep all day."
"Not really," Jonathan countered, "I'm sure that Jack will come and get me to do some work."
"If you say so."
Jonathan closed his eyes and focused as much as he could on sleep, not letting the yells and shouts of the people on deck to ruin his nap.
