An six year-old Jonathan woke up to the sound of seagulls calling out onto the ocean while the sun began to rise over the water. He got up from his bed and made his way to his mother's room where she was still sleeping peacefully. Jonathan climbed up onto the bed while containing giggles.
"Is that a little boy I hear giggling?," The mom had a smile on her lips, even though her eyes were closed.
"Morning mama," Jonathan chirped.
He snuggled underneath her arm as she held him close to her body, a sign of motherly affection.
"What are we going to do today?," Jonathan asked.
"Hmm," his mother hummed, "I think we should go to the small pond and practice swimming."
"Why can't we swim on the beach instead."
"Because I forbid you to go further than ankle deep."
Jonathan pouted, but listened to what his mom said. She opened an eye to see his disappointed expression.
"But," she offered, "We can go for a walk on the beach after dinner."
"Yay!," Jonathan sat up and cheered.
He leapt out from the bed and rushed downstairs just as his mom started to get up. Jonathan waited patiently while she cooked them up a breakfast. Soon after they set out, the mom changing into a different dress before leaving, to go down the path and to the secret pond; it had a huge waterfall going down it, but that's what made it special. Jonathan immediately took off his shirt and jumped into the water.
"C'mon mom," he jumped up and down.
"I'm coming," she waded in.
Jonathan took up swimming lessons from his mom, knowing that one day it would serve him well. She helped him practice diving and making sure his strokes and kicks were strong enough to keep him afloat.
"You're doing great Jonathan," she smiled.
Jonathan swam into her open arms, laughing with her as they spun around in the water. Soon they had to get out and head back home so that they can change into something different before going out to find some dinner. Jonathan found some fish stuck in a tide pool, grabbing them and putting them in a bag.
"Jonathan!," his mother called out for him, "Where are you?!"
"Coming mama!," he called back.
Jonathan started getting back, but he slipped a little and fell into a waist deep pool of salty water. Getting scared, he struggled to get out, but the slippery rocks made it impossible.
"Mother help!," he cried out, seeing ocean water flowing in as the tide started to come back a little.
The mother heard her child's cry, running as fast as she could to where she heard him from. She spotted Jonathan stuck in a tide pool as he struggled to get out; the water was up to his chest as he tried to get out. The mother rushed down and pulled him out. She carried him off and back onto safer land.
"Are you alright?," she asked him.
"Yes mama," Jonathan nodded.
"Good."
They walked back to their small house and had dinner. Jonathan's mom showed no anger of Jonathan being in sea water, so he took it as a sign of everything being ok. Soon they headed out to the beach and walked along the sandy shore. Jonathan spotted something in the sand and picked it up.
"Mommy! Look what I found!," he called out.
She knelt down and looked at the pearly white crab in the boy's hands.
"That's a pretty little crab," she said, "But mister crab has to go back where he belongs."
"Yes mother," Jonathan nodded.
He placed the crab back down on the sand, and it scuttled off into the ocean. He and his mother played near the shore as the sun was setting, and they laughed together. The only time his mother panicked was when he got ankle deep in the water.
"Mommy, why am I not allowed to swim in the water?," Jonathan asked his mom as they gazed at the stars.
"You can swim in any watery area," she said, "But the ocean is no place to swim. You must promise me you'll never go into the ocean water passed the top of your foot, ok?"
"Yes mommy."
She kissed the top of his head, and was going to sing his favorite song.
"Cruel and cold like winds on the sea. Will you ever return to me? Hear my voice, sing with the tide. My love will never die. Over waves, and deep in the blue. I will give up my heart for you. Ten long years I'll wait to go by. My love will never die...Come my love, be one with the sea. Rule with me for eternity. Drown all dreams so mercilessly, and leave their souls to me. Play the song you sang long ago, and wherever the storm may blow. You will find the key to my heart; we'll never be apart. Wild and strong you can't be contained; never bound nor ever chained. Wounds you caused will never mend, and you will never end..."
Jonathan was passed out on his mother's lap.
"Cruel and cold like winds on the sea. Will you ever return to me? Hear my voice, sing with the tide..."
She looked out onto the ocean with a sad and distant look.
"Our love will never die..."
The mother picked up her son, cradling him in her arms as she walked back up to their house. She placed him in bed and put the covers over him, and made sure he was tucked in tightly. Beyond the waters she could tell the years were closing in until Jonathan's father would return. But, she was in fear of what would happen, so she had four years left to devise a plan to make sure that the child would not be discovered. She knew what Jonathan will be capable in the future...

30 years later...

Jonathan sat on the flat part a little away from cliff edge that looked over the ocean, his mother's locket around his neck. His husband, Evan, came over and sat down next to him.
"What are you thinking about my love?," he asked while grasping the other's hand.
"Nothing really," Jonathan hummed while holding Evan's hand back, "Just a few memories here and there."
"It's been two years since we both came back here."
"That, and before that, for me, it was been 18 years...I was 10 when my mother left me on the island until I woke up on an entirely different place."
Evan released Jonathan's hand to wrap his arm around his waist; Jonathan leaned his head on top of his shoulder. Evan leaned his head on top of his, both just enjoying the ocean view. Jonathan took a small moment to look at his and Evan's matching lockets. Both of which has the same soft melody. The sun set over the water as both just sat there together.
