I found myself staying at Luke's house more than I stayed at my own. Ellie's stuffed animals slowly became second nature to me. I slowly became second nature to the children.

They were old enough to know who I was, and they knew that I wasn't related to them in any way. To them, I was just someone who babysat sometimes— and someone who, at other times, would kiss their father and blush at the slightest things he said.

I was in pure bliss and that was obvious. I was naive and they knew.

Maybe that's what made them start calling me Mum. Maybe that's the reason they asked Luke if they could call me Mum, and he asked me if that was okay, and in return I replied that I didn't mind, because I wanted to stay in his children's good books. Because staying on their good side was much better than straying on the sidelines.

At the time, it didn't seem like a big deal to me. Mum was just a nickname. I was convinced they'd grow out of it.

Only, they didn't. And that 'big deal' that didn't seem so big at the time, certainly does now.
