Josephine slowed to a walk as she entered the grounds from the back gate of the mansion. She enjoyed her morning runs on the trail in the woods behind the mansion. It was peaceful and quiet which she enjoyed immensely. She pushed open the door, cutting through the employees quarters to the main foyer, however just as she was about to walk out the other end of the corridor, she halted in front of the ajar gym door. The employees’ quarter had a separate gym for the men who worked for her father.

She stepped closer and peered inside. Her lips parted as she took in the sight in front of her. Charles was hanging from a bar, doing chin ups, his torso bare, a black sweatpants riding low on his waist, displaying his magnificent V line. His spectacular body glistened with sweat. Josephine gulped and blushed as she shook her head at the thoughts that started to swirl in her head. The next moment he looked straight into her eyes and she hurriedly backed away.

Charles felt her eyes on him before he saw her. He finished off his last set of chin ups, aware of her eyes on him.

He then looked up and square into her eyes. She immediately stepped back and he heard her steps retreating down the corridor.

Josephine showered and dressed up, her cheeks heating up each time she thought of the moment he caught her staring. It was so embarrassing. He was her bodyguard; it was not even like she could hide from him. She pulled on a pair of black denims with a white blouse and paired it off with a navy blue jacket. She pinned her bangs to the side, leaving rest of her blonde hair to fall in waves.  She grabbed her handbag and made her way down to the kitchen.

The cook had set out an elaborate breakfast spread and from the empty plate at the head of the table, she knew her father had already headed out for the day. She sat down and helped herself with some toast and scrambled eggs. She had just spooned some eggs into her mouth when his deep voice greeted her.

“Good morning”

She choked on her eggs, splattering them all over her plate. Tears blurred her eyes and she saw a glass of water held in front of her.

“Sorry for startling you” Charles said as she took the glass of water from him.

“It’s okay. I am done anyways” She said as she stood up. Charles didn’t comment on the fact that she had just begun her breakfast. He walked behind her and his eyes wandered to her shapely legs continuing with an equally enticing body. He averted his gaze. He couldn’t be attracted to her.

A week passed and they both avoided eye contact and small talk whenever possible. Josephine wanted to cap her attraction towards her bodyguard and Charles wanted to simmer down the pain that accompanied every time he looked at her and it reminded him of a past that was too painful.

It was a Sunday afternoon and Josephine was sitting on her room, reading when there was a knock on er door.

“Cheri, you free?” Jacques asked as he poked his head in.

“Oui” She said as she kept her book aside and looked at her father.

“You have to carry a package tomorrow” Jacques said as he crossed his arms and looked at his daughter.

Josephine clenched her jaw.

“No. you said that it was the last time when I took that package to the Italian mafia and nearly got killed.”

“Don’t talk back to me. Everything I do pays for you lavish lifestyle. Get that through your head. You simply do as I say.” Jacques needed her to carry that package. It was dealing with the Russian mafia’s head, Dmitri Karev. He was newly appointed after the demise of his father. Jacques knew Dmitri would be too occupied by his daughter to pay any attention to the mix up he was planning.

“No” Josephine said as she stood up from her bed.

Jacques strode forward and grabbed her by her hair. Josephine yelled out in pain.

“Don’t even dare. You are leaving tomorrow at six in the morning and Charles will be accompanying you.”
He pushed her back on the bed and walked out of the room.

Charles walked up the stairs and saw Jacques rushing down the stairs, fuming. He didn’t even glance at Charles.

Charles made his way to her bedroom and knocked. She had told him that she was going to go out in the afternoon and after waiting for her from the past twenty minutes, he decided to go ask her if she was still planning on going out.

She didn’t reply and he heard her soft cries from behind the closed doors.

He decided to go back downstairs but couldn’t will himself.

He knocked once again and pushed open her door. He immediately ran up to her as he saw blood coming out from her forehead and her tear streaked face.

Josephine vision was blurred from the tears and pain. She had struck her forehead against the bed post when her father had pushed her. Her hair roots were also sore and paining from the yank he had given her.

“Josephine what happened?” Charles said as he leaned down next to her and examined her forehead. He immediately scanned the room for any threat but it was all normal and nothing was out of place.

Josephine looked up at him and saw his worried expression rather than his usual brooding one.

“I am fine” She hiccupped and winced.

Charles got up and grabbed the first aid from the washroom. He cleaned her forehead wound and placed a band aid on it.

“How did this happen?” He asked as he shoved his hands into his pockets and rocked back on his heels. He had this urge to pull her close to his body and he nearly growled out at that urge. He simply couldn’t do that.

“I tripped and fell” She said and he immediately knew she was lying but decided against prying.

“If you say so” He replied and saw more tears trail down her cheeks. He felt this overwhelming need to protect her and hold her close. He took a deep breath and turned around to leave.

This woman was blowing up his emotions.

“I need to go out in the morning around six.”

“I will be outside” Charles replied and walked out, leaving Josephine staring at his retreating back.

How she wished he had held her and comforted her.
