Charles screeched to a stop few meters from the warehouse where he saw the minivan enter. He leaped out of the car and dialed Jacques’ number as he crouched next to a bush and observed the number of men. Jacques didn’t answer his phone and Charles cursed. He shoved the phone in his pocket and checked his ammunition in his gun. All he had was six bullets.

He growled as he saw the man who pretended to be the doctor drag Josephine into the small warehouse. There were total of six men and the woman who was dressed as the nurse outside. He slipped into the shadows and moved closer to the warehouse.
He was about to leap over the fence when he saw the men come out and he froze on his spot.

“You both stay back and make sure no one comes for her. The boss has called the rest of us back. He will be coming here in the morning.” The “doctor” said to the woman and one other man who had a snake tattoo on his jaw line.

The woman and snake face entered the warehouse and rest all got into their cars and drove off into the night.

Charles was damn sure this was the Russian mafia who had kidnapped her. Charles cursed silently. Why wasn’t Jacques answering his phone?

Charles leaped over the fence and ran to the side wall of the warehouse. He peered in through the dirty windows and saw Josephine tied to a chair and the rest two sitting on the side drinking beers.

Charles loaded his gun. All he needed now was an entry and to assess their ammunition.

He ran around the wall and paused outside the small door. He took a deep breath and kicked the door down.

Josephine yelped when she heard the door get kicked down. She gasped when she saw Charles standing there with his gun pointed. How did he get to know where she was? Josephine cried out in relief. She was so scared. She knew Dmitri had planned her kidnapping and she also knew that tomorrow torture awaited her.

However she saw the man pull out a gun and point it at her.

“Drop your weapon asshole!” He yelled.

The woman came and stood next to Josephine.

“Oh god no…” Josephine closed her eyes. Charles was probably inexperienced, how could he fight of the mafia but what happened next shocked Josephine.
One second Charles was bending down to drop his weapon and the next a knife sliced the air and struck the snake face through his throat.

Blood gurgled out and he collapsed.

“Don’t you dare come near here” The woman said.

Charles glared at her. The woman pushed Josephine and lunged for snake face’s weapon but Charles shot her dead.

To say that Josephine was in shock was an understatement. She couldn’t believe how Charles had just shot the woman square between her eyes without even flinching.

“How? What?” Josephine blabbered as Charles untied her from the chair and picked her up bridal style.

“You are in shock. Stay calm. I got you alright?” Charles muttered as he held her close.

“No! You killed the woman and the man!” Josephine yelled.

“If I hadn’t you would have been dead” Charles said as came outside the warehouse and scanned the street up and down. He couldn’t use the car he stole and Jacques hadn’t called back or sent any backup.

“No!” Josephine said with a dazed look. The way he killed those people, even her father’s most experienced men didn’t possess such skills and he was not much older than her.

“Just close your eyes and try to stay calm okay?” Charles instructed her. A second later a black SUV screeched to a halt in front of them and the back door was thrown in.

“Get in! Boss sent us to take you to a safe place.” Charles halted but then recognized the man as Javier, the one who was always in the gym.

Charles slid into the seat with Josephine still in his lap who was now passed out.

“Is Ms. Laurent okay?” Javier asked as he glanced at Josephine’s ashen face.

“Shock” Charles grunted as he adjusted her next to him and clipped on her seat belt.

There were only two other in the car, the driver and Javier. The front passenger seat was empty.

“Where are we going?” Charles asked.

“The boss wants you to take Ms. Laurent to the safe house outside Paris and stay there for a few days till he deals with the Russian scum.” Javier spat out. “Those fuckers are creating unnecessary trouble. All boss did was…” Javier clenched his teeth and kept his mouth shut.

Charles brain whirled into action. So Jacques was trying to do something big and he was stuck in some safe house. He needed to find out the details about the deal which was going on between the French and Russian mafia.

They pulled into a forested area and took the SUV off road for a few miles. The vehicle stopped in front of a small cabin hidden amongst large trees.

“All arrangements are made. You will be staying here till we come back to get you. Keep Ms. Laurent safe or else we will dispose of you before you even realize what is happening.”
Charles ignored Javier as he pulled out Josephine from the car, who was now again mumbling. Before he could enter the cabin, the car sped away.

“What the hell” Charles muttered as he pushed open the door and entered inside. The word small didn’t even begin to describe the cabin.

All it consisted of was a small living room which contained one couch and a dining table for four hence acting both as a living room and dining room. Off to the right side marked by a counter was small kitchen and to the left was a single door which was the bedroom.

He opened the bedroom door.  It was scarcely furnished with a queen sized bed, a closet and a dresser. A door further led to a bathroom. He pulled aside the duvet and laid Josephine on the bed. He removed her shoes and covered her. He checked the one window in the room and the small one in the washroom to make sure it was locked. He then walked out of the room, leaving the door ajar.

He walked to the fridge and saw a note taped on it.

“Check the bottom drawer” was scrawled on it. He crouched down and pulled open the drawer. Inside were two fully loaded revolvers and extra bullets.

Charles checked the safety on them. He tucked one in his waistband and grabbed the other one and his own which was now empty.

He went back into the room and kept them in the closet. He glanced at Josephine who was still fast asleep. He came back to the living room and sat down on the couch. The long day was catching up to him and his body was protesting from the stress he was putting it through especially after the accident in the morning.

Josephine woke up and looked around. She immediately realized where she was. It was one of her father’s many safe houses. This meant that things had really gotten out of control and then she remembered what had happened before she ended up here. The warehouse and Charles.

She wondered who was her with here. Usually her father sent Maxime here with her who kept her entertained with ridiculous yet interesting stories of when he was a young boy.

She got up and pulled open the door. She gasped loudly when she saw Charles sprawled on the couch. He was asleep

Charles immediately shot up when he heard her gasp.

“What the fuck” he cursed as he reached for his weapon, his muscles tense.

“I am sorry” Josephine muttered as she looked at his stance. He relaxed when he realized there was no danger.

“How are you feeling?” He asked.

“Okay”

“Good. We need to talk” Charles said as he got up and pointed to the couch, indicating for her to sit.

He was going to confront her about this whole non sense.
