I Loved Her

She was fire
And I loved her
But each time my hands
Reached out
They came back burned
I wanted to hold her
But she kept out her arms
Making sure I'd never
Get close enough
To kiss her scars
Yet, I loved her
She was dirt
But she was
The foundation
Of my garden
But when I brought her
The flowers
That she'd herself, made
She threw them to
The ground
And told me
That she'd never love me
Because Im a girl
But I loved her
She was depressed
And when I saw her cry
I held her hand
And stayed quiet
So she wouldn't make me
Leave her by herself
And I knew she needed
Me to be here
More than I needed to
Be there for her
And I didn't ask where
All the scars came from
Because I knew
I had them too
And even though she
Never saw mine
She never loved my scars
Like I loved hers
I loved her
I watched her when
She spoke
Because I loved the way
She said my name
My name had always
Been so mediocre
But when she said it
It became foreign
Like a language
You never understood
But you loved to listen to
And she made me love
My name
And I loved her
Her hair was like rivers
Her short figure
Like mountains
And I wanted to be
Her ocean
Her Mt. Everest
I just needed her to tell
Me that I was half as
Perfect as she was
And then I could look
In the mirror
And say, "I'm attractive"
And only because she
Said so
And I loved her
But every time
I reached out to tell her
She smacked away
My hands
But I'd always do it again
And every time
I tried to kiss away the
Sad marks under
Her sleeves
She'd pulled them down
Even further
But I always
Puckered up again
And every time I tried
To hold her fears
In the palm of my hands
She'd snatch them back
And when she told me
She'd never love me
For the thousandth time
I finally believed her
But I love her
