Twenty-Two

Today was the day that my parents were getting a divorce. The only reason I knew was because my sister had called the night before to tell me. It had only been three days since my sister and I made up, I was kinda glad we had made up so I knew I was going through this with someone.

Noah and Louis both weren't here this morning  witch sucked because Noah's car broke down and he borrowed my car. That meant either walking or catching a cab to work. It was starting to get cold since Christmas was only weeks away. That was another thing I had to plan for. I wasn't planning on going home this Christmas, not after what happened at thanksgiving. Plus, Louis birthday was Christmas Eve and he had told Noah and I that we couldn't get him a birthday gift and call it his Christmas gift as well.

I knew shopping for Louis wasn't going to be easy, I figured for his Christmas gift I could get him a gift card to a clothing store and for his birthday gift give him a cd of his favorite band. Louis had also mentioned just last night that his sister would be coming over Christmas Eve and staying the night to spend those days with him.

That put stress onto me because I had to find places for his sisters to sleep and I had to get extra food. I was happy to have them down but I was happy for all the preparing. I did end up walking to work, it was a pain in the butt but I knew I would be thankful for it later. By time I reached my office my assistant was there holding my coffee. "Good morning!" She said with a bright smile. "Good morning, anything I need to know?" I asked her. "There is a meeting at eleven, you have lunch with Mr. styles, and you have an interview discussing the winter line of cloths you designed."

"What time is that interview?" I question her while taking my coffee and setting my things on my desk. "It is at 1:30 to be exact." I nod my head then dismiss her to go do whatever work needed to be done. I take out the folder with the winter designs to look over it. Then suddenly my phone begins ringing.

"Hello?" I answer assuming it was my sister. "Well, it's done. Mom and dad are officially divorced." That's all she had to say and I dropped everything in my hand. I could hear my sister asking to make sure I was there. I couldn't find the strength to pick up my phone though.

I ended up hearing her hang up, I would call her later. I never cried much in my life. I believe the last time I had was when it was thanksgiving dinner. Then again, that day was a blur. The tears started running down my face. I wasn't close to neither of my parents, but they were my parents.

Soon I was a sobbing mess. I couldn't control myself, it just kept coming. "Mary? Are you okay? Your sister called?" I hear Noah's voice and before I can even answer him he is hugging me. "I-I just can't," I couldn't even form a real sentence. Noah shushes me, while smoothing out my hair and wiping my tears. It took me a while but soon I had calmed down. "Are you okay?" Noah finally asked me. "I will be," I managed.

After cleaning up my tears I called Sarah into my office, Noah still sitting beside me. "Yes?" She questioned me. "Cancel all my meeting today?" Her eyes got wide, "All of them?" I nod my head yes. "Even lunch with Mr. Styles?" She questions. "Tell him I'll talk to him later." She nodded her head timidly then shuffled out the door. "Where are you going to go?" Noah asked me as he watched me pack up my things. "I need to be alone," I say simply.

I didn't even remember how I got here. I had been driving forever in a day and before I had realized it I was at some coffee shop three hours away from home. It was now one o'clock, I had parked my car and made my way inside the warm place.

"Welcome to jitters! How can I be of service to you today?" And blonde boy asks me. I could tell he was natural brown because of his roots. "Just plain black coffee with two sugars." He nods his head with a smile and makes my drink. After he hands it to me I pay and find a seat in a corner next to a window. There was only a few people here. Two elderly people that were playing chess, blondie, and myself.

After awhile of the silence with my thoughts and I, blondie came and sat across from me. "How are you?" He asked. "We usually don't get a lot of people around these parts from out of town." That was great, I already stood out. "Honestly I'm doing awful." He nodded his heading seeming to understand. "I'm Niall, Nialler is what my friends call me if I had any!" The stupid joke had made me laugh, he had smiled knowing he had somehow brightened my day. "I'm Mary," I tell him with a smile. "I don't really have a nickname," I say honestly.

"I could name a couple, but they aren't nice names!" Niall joker again, "Sorry I'm a class clown," I shook my head. "You're fine. This is exactly what I've been needing. A simple conversation with no drama where we actually talk and joke around." I tell him honestly. "It's that bad?" He asks and I just nod my head. "Mind if I ask?" He questioned seeming generally interested.

"Well, it's quite a long story." I tell him, Niall checked his watch. "Well I get off work in four minuets, we call walk around town while you tell me this long story." He offered, how could I say no? It wasn't like I had anywhere to be. "Sure, I'll finish my coffee!" I tell him. He nods then gets up to clean up his station and wait for his replacement. As I'm done with my coffee Niall's replacement comes in and he clicks out. I hadn't noticed but it was already two-thirty. It had only seemed like I was in Jitters for five minuets.

"Where are we gonna go?" I asked Niall. Niall looked around for a second before making up his mind. "I'll take you too the park." I nod and he leads the way. "Now this story," he says with a small smile. "Okay, well it started back around thanksgiving. I had brought a friend of mine to dinner with my family. I have never really been close to my family, my sister hates- hated me." I correct myself, "I am like the black sheep of the family. Anyways, I had got to my childhood home and everything just seemed off. It seemed everyone was putting on an act, finally after we sit down and my sister causing drama she let it slip that my parents were divorcing. Imagine my shock! I was upset that they never even told me, I didn't know a single thing. Well fast forward a couple weeks to today, my sister called and told me they finalized the divorce."

"Really, that's got to suck! I remember when my parents had their divorce, except they ended up marrying each other again." Niall had said. "So, I've told you about me and I know nothing about you." I tell Niall, Niall laughs a little.

"Right! Well, there isn't much to me. I'm dating this girl Isabella, she is so nice and beautiful! You'll have to meet her, we've been together for three years. I use to live in Ireland until after I graduated and I moved to England. One day I was driving and just stumbled upon this town. I met Isabella, and she made me want to stay." Just hearing about him and Isabella made me smile and it warmed my heart.

"That is so sweet, Niall." It wasn't everyday that you found such dedicated couples. "Are you gonna marry her?" I ask him. "I have the ring, I just don't know when to pop the question." He started scratching the back of his head. "You'll find the perfect time, do you mind if I get your number? I must start heading back home but I would love to keep in contact with you."

"Sure, let me see your phone." I hand him my phone and he starts typing away then handing my phone back to me. "I'll see you soon Mary," he said with a smile. "See you soon Niall!"
