I wrote this book to open people's eyes to many things.
Drug abuse
Mental illness
Smoking
Drinking
Depression
Abusive relationships (physical and emotional)
and of course
Teen suicide
I write from experience and I've known people with these issues, luckily they were able to get clean.
I envisioned Luna one day and the story unfolded from there. Her death was the first thing I planned and then the rest took place.
As for Ember, I knew her character had to exist but I wasn't sure how I'd portray her until long after I thought of Luna's story. It was much easier to tell the story from her point of view instead of Luna's. To show the deterioration of the character from the eyes of someone who loved them made its easier to tell.
In the last chapter, Ember died in case you weren't sure. She bled out and overdosed in her bathtub. Her death was influence by Luna's death and her already existing depression.
