Chapter One

"Into the light of the dark black night.". One of my favorite quotes from Blackbird by The Beatles. Though this quote actually matched what was happening. The light at the end of the tunnel. I was running through the forest, trying to escape the... things. They were cannibalistic and sadistic. The wall was my only hope of survival. It was due north about another mile. If I could keep running for a mile. The thing about the tunnel is that it is very long, and not most people make the trip. I kept running past the giant trees of the redwood forest, ages old and towering even some of the mightiest buildings.

It was not to long ago that the plague hit my hometown of Crescent City. These giant trees are what kept them from reaching us. They were great obstacles they had to find their way around. You know that show "The Walking Dead"? The zombies here were fast and strong, but not the sharpest tool in the shed. It took them a while to find where the people were, but eventually they reached their destination. My destination as of right now was the border between California and Oregon. There is a giant wall there called Solidus. Cutting off the rest of the United States.

If you ask me, it was a horrible plan. If they locked even one zombie inside then that could be the end. They trapped themselves inside a pit of death. The plan went over surprisingly well. They built it just before the plague wave swept over and started decimating the lower states. The only safe states are Oregon, Texas, North and South Carolina, Maine, and Virginia. The rest of the states are terminated or their status is unknown.

Only half a mile to go, I could see the lights that showed the location of Solidus. I heard the shouts of people. Looking around I couldn't see anyone. The shouts were coming from behind. The last time I checked the zombies didn't speak. They just made groans and grunts and the occasional shriek when they found food. Then something hit me in the back. I fell to the ground and screamed in agony. The Zombies were going to catch me. There was nothing I could do.

One of the Zombies stood above me and started to lean down for a bite. The end of my life would be when I was running for my life. I wanted my life. The only life I would get. I don't want to be mauled to death by a dead person. Then an arrow flew and hit the zombie in the head, sending him falling to the side. There was a blur and then my vision went black. Darkness was filling my head. I could still hear what was happening around me. There was shouting and then quiet.

You know that feeling when it is so quiet you hear ringing or maybe like the sounds of wind. There's a rumor that if you wait long enough that you will hear voices. Voices speaking to you. Saying things that you wouldn't understand, things about death and times before what we knew what time was. This has happened to me before. I heard a voice, talking about how they were stuck there. In the dead darkness and no one to talk to besides the occasional people who drift into their plane of existence.

Is this what death felt like? Blank and empty, no one to talk to? If this was it I was really regretting my self die from whatever I died from. I want a story to tell the occasional passerby. "I was a great warrior, and then I was eaten by a fire breathing dragon." There was no such luck. I couldn't make up a great story because I didn't even know how I died.

There was nothing, and you wouldn't guess, more nothing. Nothing upon nothing, in the blank plane of my mind. Nothing to do nothing to see, just nothing.

I awoke to the sound of metal slamming. The room was cold and dark, just some light coming from under the door. The room was made of concrete and metal. There were people talking outside of the door. Actual people. I was sitting in a chair and I was duct taped to its arms, making me strain to try and get out. I kept struggling until I heard the door open. A Woman with long braided brown hair and beautiful blue eyes. She was short and a little more on the muscular side. I couldn't help stare at her though. She was the prettiest thing I had ever laid eyes on.

"Sorry about shooting you back there." She says.

I smile and then look at my shoulder. There are bandages wrapped around covering a blood soaked spot of my shirt. I look back at her and meet eyes.

"You must have really bad aim to do that." I say, half joking. I didn't like the fact that I was taken somewhere and that I was shot, but she was well worth the trip. So I tried to keep a smile. Even though I felt like shit. I also felt like my arm was going to fall off, but It could have been worse.

"I saved your life. So be grateful, I could have let you die and then turn." She replies back harshly. "That was a bad start to our new friendship. Hi I'm Ava. Nice to meet you whats your name?"

"My Name? I forgot my name..." I say smiling.

"Really? How about the name Dick then?"

"Fine... My name is Icarus." I say. I always hated the name Icarus. My parents thought it would be a cool name. They fucking cursed me basically. It was funny at some times, but people made fun of me for it. Good thing that most of those people are dead. Then the room is filled with laughter. I look at Ava.

"Icarus? What type of name is that!?!" She asks, continuing to laugh. This made me sad. I looked down and shut up. Even she stopped when I looked down. It was silent for a couple moments. I kept my head down, but when I finally looked up she said something.

"Hey... I'm sorry. I already shot you, didn't mean to make you sad or something. You hungry?"
